So i'm lumbering around with a socket 939 single core PC that i'm thinking either needs to be turned into a secondary PC or upgraded to the max.

but can i pimp my 939 up to play the latest games without changing the motherboard?

If i got a hold of a 4800+ or opteron 185, would it be decent enough? if i bumped my ram upto 2gb (from 1gb) and added a 8800GT* to my graphics would crysis and others run decently?

or is my 939 at the end of it's days, do i need to goto quad or dual core intel?

Either of those CPUs wouldn't bottleneck an 8800 below very playable frame rates for quite awhile yet. 2 gig of ram is a given and has been for ages.

Looking at things financially, considering future upgrade possibilities, your money is better spent on building a new core 2 duo machine. That's assuming you can't get a bargain on a 939 processor and ram.

i hope you dont mind me asking

would a amd x2 4400+ S939 bottleneck a 8800GT?

thanks.

I've been running a 939 X2 4400+ with an 8800GTX since March.. No problems and played Bioshock at 1920 with maximum settings.. so I would say although it's not bleeding edge, it won't cause any bottlenecks. Remember to install the AMD "dual Core optimizer".

The dual core optimizer doesn't always provide an increase in performance. So test without it, install, retest. and keep if tests are better, but they maybe worse

the x2 4800+ s939 sells for around £150. Not really worth doing at that price.

socket 939 is still a decent platform. Get yourself a dual core x2 or opteron and save yourself a full system upgrade changing to Intel.

thanks Admiral Huddy

thanks guys

2nd hand optys go for around £50 depending stepping :) extra L2 cache compared to the x2 4800 and they overclock easily to 2.7Ghz plus depending on motherboard
