Can an old, perhaps faulty, PSU damage components?

I'm building a new rig soon. As I'm on a budget, I'm going to be using the OCZ 600W PSU from my old PC - which has died. I suspected the motherboard to be the cause, but have been told that a faulty PSU can sometimes make the motherboard act erratically.

I don't want to buy £700's worth of shiny new components if this old PSU is just going to blow them up. Is it wise to play it safe and order a new one? It's about 3 years old.

Regards,
Pete.
