Hi, I've been out of PC gaming for a while, and I desperately want back in. I've only got about £300-£400 to spend, so I'm really looking for something that will do ok for now, but will be upgradeable once I have more money. I don't need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, or hdd, but I need pretty much everything else! Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

This should be fine for now then you can upgrade when you have more money.

Very nice.

But you could get 1GB of memory and upgrade it to 2GB in the future, which will, save you money and you could spend a little more on that 1GB to upgrade its spec.

Matt, I'm afaird the £400 mark is a bit of a push already atm, thats why I'm more looking for something I can add too over time.

Lee thanks for the spec, do you have any idea how well it would run in terms of modern gaming and what I would be looking to upgrade first?

thanks guys

Pretty much universal:

CPU: AM2 is the new AMD processor socket - and is intended as the platform for their forseeable processor families

RAM: Two free RAM slots on the mobo will allow for a further matched pair to be added (doubling your RAM), plus you have the opportunity of going up to 8Gb (4X 2Gb modules) should you wish.

Graphics: PCI-E X16 (the current graphics card technology), if the old AGP is anything to go by, should be with us for a while - so the graphic card should be upgradable to the latest technology for a couple of years at least.

Storage/Drives: there will be 3 free SATAII sockets allowing 3 more hard diskd/optical drives to be added (which can be accomodated by the case chosen)

Also there are a number of PCI-E X1 and PCI sockets free to add any other cards (such as sound cards, network adapters, etc) in future

Storage/Drives: there will be 3 free SATAII sockets allowing 3 more hard diskd/optical drives to be added (which can be accomodated by the case chosen)

And if that can't hold enough you can still buy external Hard Drives and DVDRW :)

Hey, I've ordered some of ghostriders spec, and Im gonna order some more tomorrow after my wages go through, but I have another question before I do! Does anyone know the difference between the Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-044-CO) £126.95, and the, Connect3D ATI Radeon X1900 GT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-049-CO) £119.95? I dont know much about them but usually the bigger number the better right? Altho the x1900 is cheaper than the x1800?

Ahh if only life were so simple eh?

It depends what you are after I suppose.

If you are planning to have 2 cards running in crossfire mode, either now or in the future, you have to get the X1900GT (as the X1800s don't support crossfire).

If however you are wanting pure processing power from a single card then it is mainly the letters following the model number that you want to look at:

XT > GT > Pro > others

This is basically due to the XT series having faster core clock speeds (625MHz as opposed to 575MHz in the GT models) and RAM clock speeds (1500MHz as opposed to 1200MHz in the GT cards).

Obviously the model number plays a part, so X1900XT > X1800XT > X1600XT as they tend to indicate the number of pixel pipelines (basically the number of pixels which can be processed per clock cycle, and the higher numbered cards tend to have more).

As you can probably see it's not exactly a straightforward process, though to simplify I would tend to advise that for the same brand the higher the RRP, the better the card, thus for a single card X1800XT > X1900GT

edit: see HERE for a decent comparison chart

Got the last of my stuff this morning and im just about up and running :) I just wanna say a big thanks to everyone who helped me, this was my first time building from scratch and I could not have done it without you guys helping me, I've been on message boards long enough to know often people are unwilling to help new people who have contributed nothing to the community so I really appreciate the friendly and helpful atmosphere here, thanks I lot guys, I only wish I could do something to contribute back :)

Stay!

Seriously, using your newly learned skills, stay and develop your knowledge and help others in a similar situation using your new-found ability :)

haha well i did learn today that you need to connect both a 24 pin power thing to the mobo, AND a 4 pin one, so I guess if someone else has the same prob i did starting up i could help out there :p And I deff plan to stick around :)
