can dvds be upscaled to anything higher?

ie when ripping to a hard drive can it be upscaled/re encidoded? or is that impossible? thanks

Well, you can encode anything to pretty much any format you like. But what would be the point if you're just copying it to your hard drive? You're not gonna magically get higher picture quality if you rip a DVD to a higher-quality format. You'll just get a bigger file.

Much better off just ripping at dvd quality and upscaling via a player.
