We never had any issues regarding sound coming from the Next door neighbours, However they did some building work in their house, knocked walls through, changed rooms, moved a bathroom etc..

this was a number of years ago, but since then the sound travelling between the houses is pretty bad. We live in a big solid house (about 100yr old), and the neighbours is the same, so its not some kind of prefab/new build.

I live with my Mother and at the time she never complained or anything, guess she didnt feel confident enough to say anything. My room is on the other side of the house so its not an issue to me.

My mam is on holiday and last night i had to sleep in her room because my room has been gutted/plastered...

Queue 3am in the morning, I can hear the next door neighbour vomitting over 3 times.. and I can actually hear someone having a pee! Can hear pretty much every word that comes out of their mouth too.

Would there be anything i could have done to rectify this problem? weve done no alterations on our building since living here.

You could do some alterations to your house.

To clarify are we talking about two detached, semi-detached or terrace houses here?

You could do some alterations to your house.

That would improve sound proofing? or just to get back at them lol

I imagine they can hear us in the same way we can hear them.

I think one problem would be that my Mam never complained at the start, I dont know if they have broken any building regulations or anything. But if you heard it yourself you would be pretty shocked

hearing people coughing up phlegm and singing atrociously to Celine Dion is a right nightmare.

Soundproofing is not the easiest thing in the world to achieve and most solutions barely work at all.

The most effective way is to leave an air barrier inbetween a false wall (filled with soundproof insulation) between you and your neighbours wall, but sound can still travel through floor joists, roof space etc so it really is an impossible task sometimes.

I can sometimes hear my neighbours especially at night, if they get up to the bathroom I will hear the toilet flush and the door close.

It would be a nightmare if they played loud music all the time or something :(.

My parents live next to their own free audio sex show, With Bassline DJs, Social dysfunction and late night decorating thrown in for kicks.

I knew nothing about it till I stayed at theirs a few weeks ago, Their neighbours are an absolute joke, They will go out, come in at like 1am, and start playing the tunes, arguing or making up!

Feel sorry my my parents :(

They've complained a few times, but nothing much has been done.

Its frustrating as hell because this house is great for sound proofing otherwise. Its walls are about 1ft thick heavy old bricks. I can listen to music loud in the dining room, and my mother can happily watch TV in the living room across the hallway.

But the living room is joined to next door, and she hears more from them than she does from me in the other side of the house :(

maybe they decided to make their rooms a foot bigger by knocking 1/2 a foot off from each wall
*is totally ignoring the structural problems that would cause*

someone above has already said its hard, but there are a few options, as said leaving an air cavity between a new stud wall and the existing wall is a good start, British Gypsum do a range of "soundblock" dense plaster board that will give additional absorption Gyproc Acoustic Performance Plasterboards If the sound is very loud and intrusive Environmental health may be able to help. But ultimately you may need an acoustician's report to establish the sound path (like water it will always find its way in via the weakest point) before you do any work.

I stay in a relatively new house with neighbours joined at each side...small rooms with thin ass walls....don't really hear much from either side apart from doors and walking up or down stairs at 3am etc. My girlfriends flat is ancient, has huge ceilings etc and we can hear the neighbours at it all the time, can hear pretty much every word far too clearly for my liking!

Big rooms tend to amplifiy it a lot.

Is one of them noisier than the other? If so record it and send the recording to them with a note saying 'guess what your partner got up to whilst you were out'. That should stop you hearing those kind of noises for a while..
