I have recently had an answer from my boss saying that i should have been adding my mileage to and from work to my claim sheet (works out at 38miles a day)

now i started adding this from the start of last month! but what i am wondering is whether i can now claim for the mileage from when i got transfered to this office back in November??

my boss told me i should have been claiming since i moved. i just didnt think to ask at the time he said it!! im in the office by myself today so cant ask him!

thoughts??

Um... I'm not sure you can.

Are you employed? Self employed? PSC/MSC?

Does the company provide you with a car? Private fuel?

If they provide you with fuel for "substantially ordinary commuting" i.e. home to work journeys, then this is a benefit in kind and you will be taxed on it.

employed and its my car.

i was told that as part of the agreement for me coming to work out here ( i had no choice) that they would make sure i didnt get screwed over and lose money, just took me ages to ask again when i wasnt getting it.

it was supposed to be temp, but now its not lol

but i was told go there or we will have to make you redundant. first thing i said is im going to lose x amount a month in getting to and from work, they said something would be sorted out.

As said above, you'll be getting reimbursed the money for travel, but as it's home to work it'll be charged as BIK. As to whether the company will reimburse you back to November, that's up to them. There isn't much we can say to help!

Basically, the amount you are reimbursed will be added to you employment income and you'll be taxed on having been paid more.

If it was temporary then they could pay you fuel money tax free. They may be able to do that for the period up until which it became permanent - I'll check my tax law book later if I remember. As it's now permanent, they can't pay you for your mileage to work without it being subject to tax as a benefit.

We get our expenses back tax free as you have already paid the tax when you were originally paid the money to then use to fill your car.

It should be the same for you. No harm in asking how far back they will re-imburse you, but it should be back to when you started, but something sticks in my mind about a six month limit, but that may just be my company.

Good luck :)

You cannot claim for your regular commute.

HOWEVER..

You *can* claim as part of reclocation expenses - usually it's a reduced rate but you don't claim for the entire journey, you claim for the distance between your old base and your new base. It can be for up to 2 years IIRC.

That's a good point... I'd forgotten about relocation expenses. Was all hung up on temporary workplace mileage and such like.

I assume you're talking about costs of travelling to places that aren't your normal place of work. That's different.

Yes I am, but I read it that they would re-imburse him as it wasn't originally going to be his "normal" place of work and therefore technically travel to and from somewhere other than his normal location of work.

That will really be the only way they can do it for him without him getting hammered for tax on it (IIRC).

but as he must have signed a new contract surly there is no relocation. Unless it you moved after you where made permanent? or can it carry over.

the difference between where i used to work and my house is a 1minute walk, so the distance i travel now is prob 37miles a day rather than the half mile walk

Surely his being paid to travel to/from work is up to his employer, if they wish to pay for his travel, they can, there is nothing stopping them from doing it.

As for claiming back since November, only thing I can say is ask your manager really. :)
