I sold my Impreza back in August and when the deal was done, the buyer paid an extra £100 for my plate on the basis that when he changed the plates over to his plate and returned the plate to me, I would re-imburse him the £100 plus costs.

The receipt he signed for my car states the above.

However, he has now gone very quiet. :(

I have also noticed the car is now for sale on pistonheads. I knew he wouldn't look after it and will never forgive my self for selling it to him. I've even offered to buy the car back but he won't reply to me.

I have the original receipts and documents relating to the plate. Is there any way I can get the plate back?

I wasn't too fussed as I was going to by a Lancia Delta EVO1 which I could not assign the plate to being a 92 car and a 98 plate. However, I've now decided I want another Impreza and would quite like this plate back.

Doubtful I know and its not a big issue. Personally I just want my car and my plate back LOL :)

I would have thought that if he has signed to say that the registration is still yours then you should be able to get it back, contacted the CAB or the police about it yet?

Registrations belong to the DVLA and are issued to the vehicle, not the owner or keeper of the vehicle.

However since he signed the receipt, it is effectively a contract. You may be able to get it enforced through the courts. I suggest you get advice from a solicitor.

Unless there was a timescale stated doesn't your agreement effectively say that you've sold him the plates for £100 with the option for him to sell them back to you at any time?

Lordrobs, TBH I suspect your right. I haven't got the receipt to hand so not sure exactly how its worded. I know I made a mistake and its not dated.

My idea was for him to pay £100 to be retained by me until he changed the plates over. I guess he thinks he'll get more selling it privately but according the the RAC plate checker its still on the car. The last I heard he couldn't even afford the c£100 to change the plates over hence why the car is for sale now.

I've fired a polite email off to him asking to resolve this amicably but stating I will investigate taking it further. As good will gesture I've said my offer to repurchase the car stands.

I deal with a few local solicitors so I'm sure one will have a quick glance over things and advise.

I understand small claims is £30 to start things rolling? Not too bothered either way but might be worth a shot.
