im using my setup for 3ds max scenes, some of which are exceeding th 16gb I currently have (2x8gb sticks) can I mix what I have with 2x16gb of the same memory type? If so is there a certain configuration I should follow or can I just stick them in the 2 empty slots I have?

Thanks
James

OK thanks, thought this might be the case but hoped to be able to use what I already have

Just try it with all 4 if it’s stable you’re good.

I’m running a very odd combination of 4x4GB and 2x16GB sticks in a quad channel board, different speeds/manufacturers and it works fine, even in quad channel.

Can I permanently damage anything if they’re not stable or will I just get warning and have to remove 2 of the sticks?

There are a few things to do make sure this will work with stability. Firstly make sure on your motherboard the 2x 8Gb are in one memory channel.
The other sticks are in the other memory channel. Make sure your memory speed is on the slowest setting for the slowest speed sticks. I've had to do this myself a few years ago and it does work. However if you start using faster settings that your slowest sticks as 8pack says stability will go out of the window.
