The hdmi port on my 360 elite decided to stop working last night.
So my plan is to go out this morning and buy another one and swap
the hard drives over. Can anyone confirm that this is not a problem.

Also before you ask:

There are no red rings
There is no E74 error
Its not the hdmi cable or the hdmi port on the tv or avamp.

When I swapped mine I had to do this to allow my downloaded content to work and you can only do it once every 12 months ...

To download your licenses to your new console:
1. Make sure you're signed in to Xbox LIVE with this account: YOUR ACCOUNT
2. Press the silver Xbox Guide button on your controller to open the Xbox Guide. Go to Settings and select Account Management, then select Download History.
3. Select an item and then select Download Again.
4. Repeat step 3 for each item in your download history.

After downloading is complete, anyone on this console can use the content, whether you're signed in to Xbox LIVE or not. If you are attempting to use this tool again as a result of a repair, or have used it within a year as a result of a previous repair, you may need to contact Xbox Support. Visit xbox.com/support for contact information.

Surely that's only if you're replacing the console AND the HDD? He shouldn't have to download everything again, as it's already on the HDD that he's keeping?

When you download anything from XBL, you get two licenses, one for your account, and the other for the console (which resides in the console, not on the HDD). If he transfers his HDD to another console, he's only moving one of the licenses (the one for his account), which means he can only play those arcade games/content if he's signed into Live. If he transfers the licenses then he'll have no problems.

You'll need to reinstall any installed games that you have on the hard drive.

Hope this helps. :)

Ok I got my new 360 elite and have my original 120gb elite hdd connected.
I am thinking of selling my new 120gb hdd to a friend. Can he order the
data migration kit from microsoft to transfer the hdd data from his 20gb disc
to the 120gb disc easily?

Ah, that'll teach me for just skimming what he quoted, didn't see the word "license" :o :(

Thought it was explaining how to redownload the actual games/dlc etc again :(

Can I ask if I get a 250gb HDD and want to copy my data over with a kit will it copy the HD installed games or just the game saves etc? I've got a full 120gb drive and dont feel like reinstalling all those games if can avoid.

If its not gonna be poss then I might as well move saves to a memory unit, swap HD and transfer saves and then re-install games from the game disks ?

I think the transfer kit copies everything, so it should in theory copy your installed games as well. When I transferred data it was before it was possible to install to hard drive so I'm only taking an educated guess here though.
