Can i partition a drive and hide it?

Depends how well hidden you want it. The simple way is just to delete the drive letter assignment in Disk Management and re-apply it when you need access to the partition.

You can make a partition appear as "Unknown" in Disk Management by manipulating the partition ID, e.g. change type 07 (NTFS) to type 17 or type 0C (FAT-32 LBA) to 1B. You'll need a tool to do this and know where to look in the MBR. If you get it wrong you can render you PC unbootable and your data unreadable!

You can hide it even deeper by removing it from the partition table in the MBR. The space will appear as unallocated in Disk Management. Again, you'll need a tool that can record where the data is outside of the partition table. Some boot managers such as Ranish Partition Manager allow you to do this.

Be very careful because Windows and any other OS will happily partition and format any unoccupied space on your hard disk so you really need to know what you're doing.

have a go on TruCrypt - create a hidden partition within a partition, nice and handy mate.

WB - I use this on my usb drive, can't detect the hidden partition within the partition. No other reason bud ;)

So then don't let anybody else use the pc, or get a laptop? or even a removable hard drive?

What if they were to get stolen?

If you have sensitive data that you want to protect then encryption is a good idea.

TrueCrypt is very good program and it's free. You can use it to encrypt a partition.

and what happenes if the pc was stolen? :D

andr3w1984, you need a password to mount the hidden partition. TC allows you to set up partitions as hidden or not. either way you need a password.

a "hidden" partition exists inside a non-hidden one. you have two passwords, one mounts the non-hidden, the other mounts the hidden.

There's no way to tell by looking if a partition contains an embedded hidden partition.

in brief: if someone steals the pc, they'd need the necessary passwords.
