Can I trust these people that ring up with mobile phone upgrade/contract offers?

Hi,

I've been offered 10% off my contract and also a phone upgrade but how can I tell if they are legitimate?

Am I best off just ringing up Orange and seeing what they can offer me?

Cheers. :)

I got a random call the other day from onething like freedom2connect offering me a great deal.. i basically went along with it and just hung up at the end after making it sound like i was interested :P

Personally i would not go for them.

There was a thread on here a week or so ago about someone who upgraded with a company acting on behalf of (02?)... and they basically recieved a refurbed handset!

I wouldn't bother to be honest mate.

Good on ya mate. Cold calling shouldn't be encouraged. If someone you don't know and never given your number to calls you to offer you a stonking deal you never requested in the first place you just know it's going to be rouge trade.

I look at it this way, would you give your bank details out across the phone bearing in mind they called you to someone selling something else, especially as half the time their numbers are hidden? - I do the same thing in the street with 'charity workers', I tell them I'm happy to pop 10p in a donation pot but I'm not giving my bank details to a stranger I have just met, when fake brochures and ID are so easy to make in Photoshop these days!

Yeah that was me. Luckily i sent it back ASAP and they cancelled the upgrade with O2. I phoned O2 and got a z710i for 20quid and a better tarrif.

Id stick with the actual network operator at least you always know where you stand then.

"Good morning we're calling from T mobile"

HI

"How are you today sir?Are you payg or contract?"

Well you have the computer in front of you, cant you tell me?

"erm erm erm yes but but i e gkdd"

Im contract

"Do you know how long you have left on the contract?"

Again surely if you work for T mobile then you know?

"well erm erm yes sir erm erm, <random guess>"

No thats wrong, i have ** left

"Sorry sir, ill update the computer"

Right i have a mda pro, So what phones can you offer me that run windows mobile 5 and offer push email?

"what? huh?"

Well i thought you were offering me a free upgrade?

"sorry sir goodbye"

WHO on earth actually buy phones off these people!??

^^ So similar to the majority of calls we receive. It really annoys me how they pretend to be calling from BT, Orange or whatever, then ask you all these questions they should blatantly know themselves.

What also bugs me are marketing companies that ask you for your postcode as soon as you pick up!

Oh yeah, and those ***** who hang up on you as soon as they realise you don't fit the criteria for what ever product they are selling. HOW DARE THEY?!? I HANG UP ON THEM!!!! :D

Well, just sales calls in general then I suppose.

Gavin,
When was this?, I dont suppose you still have the phone number they called on or company details?, only T-Mobile now have a policy that 3rd Pty Outbound calls are no longer allowed, so I could pass the details on when im back in work (if you still have them!)
Cheers

I had someone claim to be from Three ring up to offer me a new handset free of charge on payg, after a couple of minutes of listening to them I told them not to bother sending it out as I would get a new phone and contract when I wanted to, not when someone rings me up. Now I just say as soon as my contract is up I'm getting a mobile through work, they tend to hang up pretty quickly now :D

I dont know what that means but im always getting them on my mobile, i was payg with t mobile then ported the number over to contract and get at least 1 call a week, ill try and remember next time to note the details...

All i can remember is it was a firm in blackpool

Basically T-Mobile no longer authorise 3rd Party companies to make calls asking you to upgrade, I work at the Hatfiel HQ so can pass the details on if you get any more.

Doesn't help, I'm signed to TPS both at home and mobile and still get spammed on both few times a month. If it's not phone upgrade or "you have won the newest handset" then it's anglian driveways, tom, dick and harry's pcv windows or a revolver calls that hung up on you in hope you will call them back and listen to 1 minute of onhold music and 2 minute message on 0870 number earning then a pity 1.5p per minute. The Ofcom regulated phone industry in this country is so unregulated you have phone scam every week. If it's not direct, it's indirect, like the most popular one at the moment - you know, all the night time TV quizes that have 1000's waiting for you, and look, no one is calling in - all you have to do is call a premium number, spend few minutes giving your details then listed to few minute message explaining how you weren't selected to go on air and please try again. In the meantime the lady on telly is going out of her ways to give you a clue to "how much is 4x4?" question, "how many fingers do I hold" she asks "can someone please call and get £1000 pounds". Just how many grammas missed that small dislaimer scrolling on the bottom of the screen?
