Can I use Itunes to transfer music to other mp3 players?

Can I use Itunes to transfer music to other mp3 players? I love I tunes and my music is well sorted in that program, but due to the lack of apple support my ipod has bitten the dust. I want another Mp3 player but I dont know which one, should I get another Ipod?

iTunes = iPod, if you get what I mean. That's the cause of all this noise about Apple opening up iTunes to other MP3 players.
