Can I use vegetable oil instead of olive oil

oil is oil, i do it all the time, most olive oil is crap anyway (i assume your on about adding a few drops to the water? its suposed to stop the pasta sticking together/to the bottom of the pan) ?

I'd use vegie oil. No point in wasting olive oil if you're just boiling pasta. Save it for the balsamic vinegar dip.

:)

huh?

dont you just boil pasta in water?

You can, but a dash of oil reduces the likelihood that they'll all stick together in a horrid soggy lump that reminds you of something you wish you'd never seen on the internet.

Cheers!

yeah to stop it sticking, wasn't sure if it contributed to taste at all. I am new to the whole cooking malarkey and with the kitchens I have exploded in the past I like to double-check everything!

It's a myth btw, the adding oil to past to stop it sticking thing.

An ex was a chef. And plus it's simple physics: oil floats. And if it does coat the pasta, it'll just make it harder for it to absorb flavours (+ salt etc.).

I've never put oil in with pasta while it cooked. I give it a few stirs at the start then keep back about half a cup of the water it cooked in to keep it moist and help the sauce to coat it.
