Can laminate flooring be laid over carpet?

if the carpet is old and really flattened i guess it would be ok but still not great. if its nice bouncy shagpile i doubt it. you will screw the floor bringing it up anyway
After we bought our house, I was so pleased to find the last owner had put laminate flooring over the old carpet and underlay.
Problems with damp and bouncing ensued. Somehow the carpet had become damp, and couldn't properly dry. We had to rip it all up and run a de-humidifier for a couple of weeks to sort it all out. It also creaked.
You can do it, but I wouldn't recommend it from my experience.
