Hi all,

My machine is over 6 yrs old now and I'm contemplating a replacement.. but all I use it for is web browsing and downloading. Is £300 still the cheapest you could find a new laptop for ?

Thanks,

Much better value 2nd hand. Get something around a year old off the bay, there should be plenty for that sort of price.

I don't mind second hand, but my last one was an Advent P4 1.8Ghz and I burnt it out a lot so a warranty is handy :o

Got mine a year old off the bay, still got a year warranty on it and i've had it a year.
No idea if they would ask for a receipt if i tried to send it back under warranty for anything, hopefully not as i haven't got one. Not sure if the warranty expires once you sell it on though?

Spend a little extra and get one for brand new. You're looking at £349 for something from Dell. When buying second hand, you have many issues to consider - not least that if something goes wrong, say 2 months down the line, that the person selling it can just shrug their shoulders and say "it was working fine when i sold it". Now laptops being as they are, are generally not as easy to fix as desktops - and replacement parts can cost a bomb.

What it comes down to is that to me, £300 is not an insignificant amount of money, so I'd want to be sure that what I bought had some kind of guarantee. You also have the benefit a newer battery, as well as these days Centrino etc are much much better than the old mobile P4s in terms of battery life. :)
