Firstly please no corsa jokes because I really dont need it at the moment.

Someone in a van drove into the back of me on Friday, the force of which pushed me into the stationary car (I was stationary as well) in front and my 52 plate corsa sxi is now battered.

The insurance people took it away today, and they have said its going to cost £2500 to repair, so I reckon I am looking at a write off due to the value of my car being less than that.

I have never had a crash before so its upsetting me having to do all this to say the least. Can someone get me a price for what I can expect for my car.

Its a 52 plate 5 door sxi with 50k on the clock, its metallic silver. (any other info you need let me know)

I have no idea how these things work, I am also suffering from whiplash, which I have told the legal people about. The bloke in the van who hit me has admitted full liability.

I am waiting for the engineer who assesses whether work can be carried out, or it gets written off to get back in touch with me, but can someone give me an idea of what happens next.

Worst thing is I havent done anything wrong. I have no spare money to put towards any kind of replacement car, and I can't see me getting an equivalent, more ending up worse off.
:(

You say you are suffering from whiplash, has this been confirmed by a doctor? If not then get down there so you can get whippy compo innit ;). If the other driver has admitted liability get an accident management company involved to save yourself the stress and hassle.

Yes the doctor has written on my medical records that I am suffering whiplash. I spoke to the legal people at Direct Line who got their solicitors to speak to me on Saturday, and they are sorting that side of things out hopefully.

You're probably better off going through someone like Albany or Helphire, is Direct Line your own insurer? You might find you'll have to pay the excess until the other company pay out if so.

Direct Line are mine, I think it was Lyons Davidson who were their solicitors.
The van driver who hit me's insurer rang me this morning to say they were admitting full liability and I made them aware about the whiplash. They also said something along the lines of there not being any argument about disputing any money I am owed.

You'll get bottom book for your car which I'd guess is very little, ~£800 though I'm willing to be corrected here. Touch wood I've never damaged any vehicle with a value of more that £500 :) throw away motors for the win

Surely they have to offer me what its worth. Have been looking in the paper and they are about 2k with more mileage than i've got.

Looks like I am the first to have a stab at the car's value then. I assume its a 1.2 petrol and not the 1.7 diesel?

I don't have access to Glass's, but Parkers list it around £1800 for a private sale, in good condition with an average mileage of 80k. So I guess yours might be worth around £2k perhaps? Can't see it being £2500.

Chin up, at least you're ok (minus the whiplash)

edit: oh well second then lol.

Yes it is the petrol 1.2
Yes I am ok, but I could have done without this. Its my birthday this week, and I am not even thinking about that due to all the goings on caused by the prat in the van. :(
(feeling sorry for myself I know)

Ive no idea what the cars worth, but get a collection of adverts of the same car with similar spec that you can show the insurance company if they offer less than its worth.

As above start collecting adverts so you can show evidence of what your car is worth.

Also don't know if you've been told this by your insurer, but keep any receipts you use for things like taxis, painkillers etc arising from the accident, and keep a diary of how you are feeling each day in terms of the whiplash/pain etc, when you visit the doctor etc.

Otherwise hope it gets resolved soon and you feel better soon too!

The only advice I can give, is if their valuation is way under what you realistically think the car is worth, refuse to accept it. I've done this in the past (years ago) and on both occasions the insurance companies have given me what I felt it was worth.

As Repta mentioned, I provided examples of local cars that were being sold at values I felt were accurate. Good luck.

Thats what we did, they made an expected derisory first offer. We rejected it and they asked for ads to show it was worth more, was very surprised by and happy to accept their next offer which was much more reasonable.

The other insurer will settle your claim, they will instruct an independent assessor to value your car.

They will base their valuation on market value of your car and not trade value, with this in mind don't accept any less than what it would cost to replace like for like.

Forgive the stupid question, but if they write it off, does that mean I should get what someone would sell it for, and not what someone would offer me if I was part exchanging it/selling it for.

Because it's not your fault, it's unreasonable for the other persons insurance company to offer you less than the amount required to replace it like for like.

So yes what you would pay to buy another in similar condition and with similar mileage.

Remember as well Knip, if they offer you an amout which is crap, just stand your ground with them and refuse it. I swear a lot of the time they make derisory offers in the hope that people just take it without considering.

Oh, and get well soon. :)

Nothing to add really Knip, but I hope everything gets better soon, its a horrible thing to happen. I would just ring helphire and leave them do the rest.

They said it was borderline write off, but have decided to repair it. Guessing that's cos his insurance is picking up the bill?

Am glad it's turned out this way though, saves all the hassle of having to find a new car, and I get to keep the hire car until mine is returned.

Waiting for the nurse from the legal people to ring me about my neck, which isn't improving.
