As title, at the moment I'm playing DVD's through my 360 which isn't ideal :)

I'd like one that upscales (TV can do 720p/1080i). I'd also like it to have a USB port and read DivX (I presume this will play xvids and the like?).

Question though, can you plug an external HD into them and play videos?

I noticed a panasonic one in Asda the other night which seemed to do what I wanted for £80 I think it was. But I thought I'd ask on here first.

Price limit is around the £80 mark, cheaper the better though.

Forget a DVD player for Divx/Xvid, some will work, some won't. Problems with subs, difference in codecs, ogg audio, MKV etc etc etc. I gave up and bought a HTPC instead. That for PC video, and a Oppo 981 for DVD-Videos.

If you have a spare computer, then build up a MCE/Media Portal box.

Well I have an original xbox as a media center but for some reason it won't play DVD's . I have the remote/sensor and everything.

EDIT: nvm it works just had a mess with it. Still wouldn't mind a good upscaling player if the price was right though. I'll keep the xbox for xvids etc if they don't work as well.

Philips DVP5980 does everything you want.

It upscales up to 1080p, plays divx/xvid, can be unlocked to multi regional and has a usb port. I got one last week and it's absolutely amazing.

I've only tried the usb port with a pen drive so not sure how well a bigger external hd would work, but it played several different .avi files I had. Reading a few reviews it seems to do pretty well with other formats as well.

Can be had for around £55 at the mo from a well known e-tailer. Google is your friend :D

I'd recommend the Philips DVP5980 as well. Best DVD player for the price and I can't really fault it apart from the rubbish remote. Plays all DVDs regardless of region which is great.

Another question before I order, does the pioneer come with a HDMI cable? Doesn't list box contents anywhere. If not is it a male-to-male cable I'd need? Any cables specifically better than others?

Nevermind done my research. Ordered the dv400 for £52, HDMI cable off the bay for a fiver, an 8gb flash drive and a Louis Theroux boxset :D

Good times ahead :D

This is what i dont really understand. I posted in my thread a few ones down about using my 3-4 year old DVD player for my new Samsung LE40M87BD. Surely would the TV not just do the same job as an upscaling DVD player? I could be wrong, but thats what i understand

Yes you're right, but expensive DVD players can upscale the image better than your tv can. The players mentioned in this thread won't offer any improvement over your tv.
