can u get cash back on a cheque in supermarket

I know you can use a cheque in a supermarket (like tesco, morissons etc)

i know you have to use your cheque guarantee card (debit card)

but can you get cash back this way?

i dont get paid till monday and am a bit poor so wouldnt mind getting some cashback when i go to buy some food later.

no. i can see what you're going for though. if you pay on your debit card and get cashback it wont come out until monday anyway

Is it not a criminal offence to present a cheque for which you know there are no funds in the account for at the time you present the cheque?

It is when they want to take the money from your accpunt for the purchase.

This is what i thought. I thought the idea of using a cheque was so that the funds could be taken out 3business days aftwards but the guarantee limit on the card makes sure they can take money out (otherwise you get charged the amount + a cheque reversal fee from the bank).

No i dont have enough funds in the account till monday but if i bought stuff today then it wont go out my account till tuesday/wednesday which is fine.

I sometimes pay my petrol this way and never had a problem.

Technically an offence of account conditions yes, never advisable to do it.

many shops are now refusing cheques totally , always makes me laugh when I am stood in a queue and someone pays with a cheque and then uses their debit card to guarantee the cheque

i've never understood that - i have to guarantee my cheque with my card anyway apparently. i've used 2 cheques out of my book, and they were both for ebay

it's because they don't have the money in their account and if they used their debit card on it's own it would get rejected

When i worked at a supermarket i gave cashback on a cheque once or twice in 3 years. It's probably worth checking with your local supermarket as you might be able to, but the staff might not know
