many shops are now refusing cheques totally , always makes me laugh when I am stood in a queue and someone pays with a cheque and then uses their debit card to guarantee the cheque

I work part time in a supermarket, we do accept cheque and need a garantee card to go with the cheque. This is nearly always a debit card!

I work on the checkouts in Somerfield, you cannot get cashback on a cheque in there. Annoys me when people pay with them, takes twice as long as any other payment method. Meh.

I know you are probably a more authoritative source on this subject bit I too thought it was a criminal offense

Sorry, I meant it's written into the account conditions to reflect the legal implications of writing a cheque without having the funds to honour it. We tend to advise customers that it is against the conditions of the account rather than being illegal (unless absolutely necessary) as this can cause a can of worms to open! :p

Is it not a criminal offence to present a cheque for which you know there are no funds in the account for at the time you present the cheque?

I thought so but then you could so easily plead that you didnt know there were no funds.

You can only get Cashback on a Debit Card.

Cheques, Credit Cards are a No No for Cash Back :)

You can pay by cheque, and if your debit card has a cheque guarentee the retailler can phone the bank to check the card status, if Active then they can accept the cheque if its lower then the guarentee amount and the bank will make sure they get the cash wether the client has it or not.

e.g

£50 Cheque, card guarentees upto £100 - retailer calls - bank says yup card not lost or stolen so itll guarentee, retailer accepts check and even if funds not in account the bank will pay up to the retailer

Unless the retailer TRANSACT's the cheque, in which case, if there are no funds to cover it then it'll more than likely be declined regardless of whether you use a cheque guarantee card.

I used to go on checkouts at Sainsbury's. Get daft people going "I want to pay this much with cheque, this much with cash and this much on my card... and can I have cash back with that?"

feel like saying "no you cant you awkward cow!"
