Can unlocked hd6950 be crossfired with hd6970?

Hi, I'm considering getting an ATI HD6950 and flashing the BIOS to unlock it to a HD6970. But I would want to be making a crossfire setup a year or so down the line and I hear ATI is going to stop future HD6950 from becoming unlockable?

In which case if I unlock a 6950 today, can I buy a 6970 later and put the 2 in crossfire and expect them to work as if it was 2x6970 in xf?

Once flashed they are 6970s as far as the driver is concerned. I think it'd work just fine but I'm not 100%

the card name is still 6950 in some apps but it acts like a 6970
