can you recomend 5 must play PC games?

Supreme Commander & Forged Alliance
Skyrim - Epic
Company of Heroes
Star Wars Empires At War (Ignore the land battle farce)
Men At War (larger scale CoH with rpg elements)
Rome Total War & Medeival Total War II (wet my pants WHEN Rome TW II comes out)

Medeival Total War II and Empire (a little marmite)
Stalker SoC (still playing to complete it)
Sim city 4
Railroad Tycoon 3
Company of hereos (played through 3 times, just love it)

Ignoring a few of my true favorites to give you more story driven ones as per OP (I don't really do scary but for that I'd add the oft recommended Stalker)

Fallout 3
Morrowind
Oblivion
Knights of the Old Republic
Bastion.

Fallout 3 GOTY
Resident Evil 5
Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY
Batman Arkham City
Dead Rising2
Dead Rising 2 Off The Record
Dead Space 1
Dead Space 2

Batman AA/AC
Mass Effect Trilogy
Psychonauts
The Witcher 1 & 2
Carmageddon

These have all been the most enjoyable and fullfilling games I have played over the past 23 years.

Deus Ex and sequels
Bioshock
Arkham Asylum and City are awesome but did you want archetypal PC games?
System Shock 2 with mods
Portal / Portal 2

Amnesia is supposed to be an awesome horror game but I've not played it.

Condemned was creepy.

F.E.A.R.

Mass Effect 2 was very close to perfect.

the only thing i can add to the above is, if you like scary games, then the later parts of thief deadly shadows should give your pants the brown factor you're after.

it might be from 2004 but the gameplay is awesome if you like stealthy stuff and the graphics arent too bad (obviously it doesnt look as nice as modern games but they're ok)

No point getting games that you can get on a console IMO, unless you don't own a console.

If you own a console:

Arma II - free to play the standard multiplayer with the Arma II Free on Steam.

Terarria - possibly the best Indy title out there, I prefer it to Minecraft, personally.

Diablo III - despite all I bash it, its has great gameplay, just everything else about it is horrible.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - while it is on console, playing Skyrim on console is about 10% of the real game thanks to the modding community (you may also want to look into Oblivion & Morrowind)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R (Call of Pripyat, Clear Skies & Shadow over Chernobyl) - the best single player experience on PC in my opinion.

BTW If you enjoy Arma II Free, I'd recommend buying the Combined Operations pack for it, which will give you access to the whole game and allow you to play the amazing DayZ mod (or just buy Operation Arrowhead and use it alongside Arma II Free if you only want DayZ, but the textures are extremely low quality if you don't own the vanilla Arma II).

If you don't own a console:

Mass Effect 1 & 2 (play 3 if you want more story, as it is a terrible game) - Probably the best Sci Fi game available, although I'm sure plenty of people will argue Deus Ex on that one.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - don't bother with any of the other CoD titles, Modern Warfare is by far the best, and easily has the best community of all 1,000 titles.

Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 - although probably better played on PC, i would say that you should only play it on console as it isn't good enough IMO to warrant taking place of a better PC exclusive if you have a console. That is if your strictly looking for five titles to try, don't let anything thats on a console take that place, unless as I said before, you don't own a console.

Minecraft - again, this is on console too, so only try it on PC if you don't own an Xbox.

Dead Rising 2/2.5(Off the Record) - both games are the same price now, but Frank West is too awesome to get 2 over 2.5!

Hope that helps. :)

There is one game I have seen pop up more than once in this thread...

SYSTEM SHOCK 2

If you have not played this then you have missed out! Also read there is a texture mod out for it. It would seem right up your street.

Thank you and everyone else

As in SINGLE PLAYER.

so·lo/ˈsōlō/
Noun:

Adjective:
For or done by one person alone; unaccompanied: "a solo album".
Verb:
Perform something unaccompanied, in particular.
Synonyms:
single - solitary - sole

;):D

borderlands
amnesia
dead island (not scary but has zombies and baseball bats!
dead space 1+2
alan wake

most of them are available on the consoles but youve not said if youve had one of those so i left them in

Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead, not Arma2 the free version as I don’t think it gives access to all the mods/addons available, not sure however, so checking would be advisable.

Then, Arma 2 Reinforcements, it gives new content, maps etc.

There's a free version of VBS2 you could try, mil sim version of Arma

Iron Front, although its a little limited, but still a reasonably good WW2 game.

Sorry the choice is limited to Arma 2 types, this is mainly what I play..:D
