Maybe I'm missing something, but are you sure the card is bad. Have you diagnosed it? The symptons sound like a bad or insufficiently rated PSU.

I'm not sure, no. I can only assume because every question I've sent the retailer is ignored, I have considered the PSU but the computer is an Alienware and the PSU fitted is the one they provide with the 5970 (875W). I can't buy another higher rated PSU because the factory one has special wiring for the active vents and lights, but if you configure a desktop on their website it does state 875W PSU with 5970 cards and crossfire 5870's.
P.S. Yes, I already know Alienware computers are for bad men. I wouldn't ever buy another.
