Hi,

Quick question, mate has a G3258 on MSI Z97 1150 socket mobo and is getting issues with some games such as Witcher 3 etc. From a quick google it looks like its fine to upgrade to an i5 4460/4690 (possibly with a bios update) but I wanted to double check with the experts before he spends any money.

I'd appreciate it if anyone can confirm this is doable.
Cheers,

It'll give a massive boost, the G3258 is a titanic bottleneck in the latest games due to the lack of threads and the drops and spikes are brutal. I actually reviewed a G3258 with a GTX980 about 2 or 3 years ago and even then it was brilliant in about 70% of games and rubbish in the other 30% - now it's more the other way, decent in 30% of games and crap in 70% (and totally unplayable in some now like BF1)

Actually here it is, comes up as first in Google search funny enough when you type in g3258 gtx980 benchmarks.

Thanks for that mate, really appreciate it, i've sent him the link to read. Scary thing is that the PC is only 12-18 months old (OCUK pre-built) and in that time it has gone from running games fine to simply not running some games at all. I think we got hung up on trying to get the best GPU within his budget (970) and didn't pay enough attention to the likely CPU lifespan... He's really happy he can upgrade CPU without having to do mobo + RAM as well.
Thanks again!
