Canadian couple give away lottery winnings

What I could do with a lottery win.

If they didn't want it they shouldn't have played it.

Still, better than being a millionaire and leaving it to your goldfish - that really riles me

Good on them, although if I were their children, I would be extremely ****ed off. I'd value my children over charities and what-have-you.

Echoing many of the replies here - good on them, but if I was giving away to charity, I would have at least kept the stake money. Say I bought 2 lines of lotto numbers every week for 5 years then I won the jackpot. That's £500 in stake money.

They kept $700,000

"They had donated about 98% of the cash after helping their family."

It says they donated $10.2 million after they'd helped friends and family, this suggests to me that the other $700k went to their F&F.

Maybe they played the lottery because they wanted to donate money to charity but felt they didn't have enough to make a difference?

I know it's not the same, as they're already rich, but it's like celebrities going on game shows to win money for a charity of their choice. They played the lottery specifically to have some to donate to charities that were close to their heart.

I think it's nice.

They probably bought tickets because they though it would be a nice surprise to win £10 or 20k.

I think it was really nice of them to donate most of it to charity.
I know if I won, I'd be very generous to family and friends, but I'd donate very little to charity*.

* to be fair though, the only reason I'd not donate much is because once life settled down after the initial travelling/spending spree, I'd put in 20hrs/week as a volunteer at a charity.

Good on them. An absolutely great thing to do.

All of you saying ''why play it'', well they clearly played it so they could help these causes and they have achieved that.
