Hi Chaps,
So I'm "eligible" for an upgrade from orange, but they as suspected they won't give me any decent phones for free.
So, what are the logistics of cancelling the current contract, and signing up for a new one for a free phone? What about transferring my number between these two contracts?

Cheers

No, but I was told yesterday the easiest way is to move you number to a PAYG for a month, then get a new contract and move it back.

The PAYG must be another network.

Cheers guys.

I phoned up orange and explained to them I could get the phone for free from another supplier, so they put me on hold and I spoke to someone else. He offered me the phone for free (was £99 to me as an upgrade) then I managed to get a £30 plan for £25.

Very nice chap, and I hardly had to barter at all.

Nice one Ben,

I had a simaler thing. Wanted a wifi phone, the M3100. been with orange for 8 years, paid on time, never been any hassle [ish]

contract ended in january aso i wanted to upgrade from my SPV C600 to the M3100. was told it would be £150 to upgrade, said no thanks and got them down to £100 on a 12 month contract and £4.99 on a 18 month contract.

Went to orange shop here in Leeds, they told me as my contract is about to end, get a PAC code, go PAYG with orange or someone else for a month, come back to orange and get the phone for free on a 12 month contract as a new costumer and with a PAC code i keep my number.

So, old custermer - rip me off, new custermer, wlecome me with free phone! go figure. When i told CS im leaving to go to O2 they asked what they could do to keep me on orange. Said give me the contract im on now for 12 months and the M3100 for free.... nope, wont do it. Yet go to O2 or vodaphone as new person on a 12 month contract i get the phone free lol.. madness.

So now im waiting for the N95 and will see what deal i can get then.

But well done in getting what you wanted, not many do as they seem to not care about exsisting custermers, even if i cant spell.

I've read O2 are now going to be offering the same deals to existing customers as they do for new customers. Hopefully the other networks will do the same.

If you look into it further you'll see that O2 will offer you the same TARIFF deals as a new customer. When it comes to handsets unless you're on a £30/month tariff or above then expect to still have to pay for handsets come upgrade time.

That's exactly it, it's the same as Orange has been doing for about 2 years now...

It's funny - everyone thinks they are "worth" keeping as a customer and moan when a network refuses to negotiate etc.
If you aren't worth keeping and are actually making a loss to the network then why expect to be given deals?
They want you gone!

The reason new customers get offered better deals is that they are unknowns - they may make a profit for the network, they may not and that will be reflected 12 months later when they are up for renewal.
If networks had any sense they would keep records even of people who had left them and when they attempted to move back to them they would know exactly just how much they were "worth" to the network, but they don't.
