Cancelled my GTX 670 order

The cards are around the same performance level. If vram had any impact, the 670 wouldn't have that lead over the 7950.

:confused:What bit of different architecture/clocks/8xMSAA didn't you get?

@PCmonkey, vram doesn't matter a jot in the games tested, they never use anywhere near 1GB, so the test was a complete waste of time, higher clocks won on the day, there was plenty of screens in the thread below that shows the vram impact on the same gpu with 1v 2GB.

@oggiet, OcUK done that, and a huge 'debate' ensued:

It depends if you want to spend an extra £100 to allow you to notch up the MSAA in game by one setting. E.g. @ 1440p going from 2x or 4x to 4x or 8x.

By the time games require more than 2gb of vram to run games at high settings (this does exclude things like aa, but at 1440p who cares?) the 670 will not have the raw power to provide pleasing framerates anyway. And then your extra £100 would be wasted.

what has architecture and clocks got to do with vram limit? :S the game was tested using 'very high settings' not sure which AA that implies though

I find the AA pretty important at 1600p myself, the bigger screen makes it all the more noticeable!

As much as I agree to a certain extent that "by the time games require more than 2gb of vram to run games at high settings .... the 670 will not have the raw power to provide pleasing framerates anyway" this is where 4gb cards in SLI come in to play. You will have the gpu grunt to process the higher demanding vram games for a good while. These higher vram games are here and are hopefully set to continue.

After all the pondering I decided on SLI 4gb 670's and I'm glad I did (running 2560x1600 you see).

Testing two same gpus gives an indication of vram limit is my point.

Your point I replied to in post 14, was relating to one gpu having better performance than a differing gpu with more vram in said game.

You can't base performance regarding vram limit by comparing 2 differing architectures/vram/clocks, simple enough to understand yet?

the game was tested using 'very high settings' not sure which AA that implies though

Which, unless they test at full maximum settings(8xMSAA) between same eg, 2GB/4Gb 670, then we won't know if there is a vram hit or not in said title.

Max payne uses 2.7GB at 1440p, you really need to stop giving advice if you dont have first hand experience.

So OP 4gb would be better, except Nvidia are way overpriced and therefore not worth it. For an extra 2GB they're charging an extra £50-100, only fools would consider it!

Only if you enable 8xAA in-game does it report that.

If you enable 8xAA in control panel - it runs without issue @ 2560x1440 on 2GB cards

I use 2 460's. no problem maxing any games out at the resolution you are wanting to play, don't waste money if theres no need for it. And i play in 3d

Never a more truthful sentence seen on the forums. I have 2 6950s and feel the exact same way. Was all for a new 7970 or 680, then come to my senses and got a cheap 6950 to pair up.

I used to have 460 SLI but I find it struggles a bit when playing BF3 at max settings with x4 MSAA.

Anyway it looks like I'm stuffed with warranty/customer support if I bring the gpu abroad. Looks like the only way is EVGA.....

I have reordered and cancelled three times since yesterday... that's me, very indecisive.
