Cannot access admin shares on XP Pro machines

I have a number of PCs at work connected to the network that are not members of the domain.

For some reason I cannot access the c$ shares on them. It just rejects the local admin credentials every tme.

It is also doing it on some vpn attached machines which is even more irritating as I need to drop some files onto these PCs.

Any thoughts why this is happening?

a 'net share' shows the following:
admin$
c$
ipc$

Do you have classic authentication enabled?

Not sure, I am not familiar with that?

You probably have simple file sharing turned on.

That did the trick. Never seen that before!

Guess there isn't a way though to disbale that with a power user logged in?!
That would be even better

As some of the PCs are remote awkward to get access to them all directly.
