I've got my thinking cap on again (or is it my dreaming cap)

I'm thinking of entering the realms of FF and this camera pops up as the cheapest start. Im also considering going with canon so i can get the MP-e 65 and continue my adventures with macro photography.

Having always been a nikon man i've never re-searched canon Dslr's. Im just after peoples opinions on this camera, and Especially with regard to macro work.

I've read a few reviews on it most of which were written back in 2002/3.
how does the camera compare image quallity wise to newer camera's like the 50D and nikon D90? (if its even feasible to compare FF to crop)

Would i be better off with a 50D/40D which can be had for a similar price? thought this doesn't fulfill my need/want for FF.

Or am i being mad and my want for FF is just about the hype and going FF wont benefit me in any way? ARGH! the decisions.

I take it the one on TP forums has caught your eye, they do seem a capable camera, the samples posted don't quite look as good as current FF stuff but at the price I wouldnt complain at all if it gives you the FF ability your after.

What price is it? Couldn't find any on the bay...

Have you looked at an original 5d too? They're newer, and legendary IQ...

indeed it did catch my eye, and that was even befor he posted those pics. He emailed them to me and the IQ is stunning, wee's all over my d90 set up.

he's just had an offer on it though :(

had a look on the bay for 5d, prices seem pretty high.

back to reality maybe i'll keep with the d90 and get the nikon 200mm, or put the money towards that motorbike.......oh the list is endless :)

Having looked at your macro work Dan I really can't see anything wrong with your setup.

Did a quick google on FF v Crop for macro work and it would seem FF technically is better on paper, ie should give sharper results, obviously FF has its benefits in other areas such as landscape and studio work, but with these older FF cameras you're limited to 3fps shooting, which could be irrelevant if your not into anything fast moving.

For the most part im happy with my set up at 1.1
but i keep finding myself wanting to go beyond that, since getting them my extension tubes have never been off the camera, but i still want more.

ever since finding out about the MP-e i've yearned for it, being able to fill a 35mm frame with a single grain of rice is very exciting for me (not the rice but the magnification)
but i've always put it off telling myself i can get the same results with extension tubes and cropping, But in the back of my mind the MP-e was still lurking.
I've got to a point where macro photography is my main intrest and the MP-e is questionably the best macro lens you can get.

The Question of what canon body to get is still a mystery, i could tell you a fair amount about nikon camera's, but nearly nothing about canon.
Besides the wanting for FF i feel that the IQ Benefits from FF would be justified.

the other thing thats held me back is having to master a new system, finding out about canons flash system, lenses triggers etc, i keep asking myself "would it be worth it?" and telling myself "yes!" but still i have not.
Maybe watch this space.

heres a quick comparison of the 1ds v 5d v 1dsmk2 for actual specs, 5d does have much better iso handling than the 1ds. linky

As for use of canon stuff, i jumped into the deep end with a 30D knowing nothing of photography or DSLRs, i mastered the controls pretty quickly given the steep learning curve. As you are already familiar it would just be a case of learning the control layout and the functions. Flash systems are ETTL or manual again not hard to master if you're familiar with all the terminology, its just learning what button does what.

I wouldn't say there's a massive difference between using the MP-E on a full-frame body as opposed to a crop-sensor. I've seen great pictures from both and ultimately it all comes down to technique and skill.

But if you were to pick up a second-hand full-frame DSLR, I'd go for the 1Ds. There's more positives than drawbacks - especially when you look at the AF system.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's the best, but there's nothing else like it and for that reason alone it's probably a must-have.

I still can't get used to the working distances though. I keep bumping into things...

It's going to be swings and roundabouts (having owned a 1D, though not an S).
The 1DS will have the DOF advantage of FF, the weathersealing, AF and metering of the 1D. Unfortunately it's also known for eating it's (expensive) batteries, doesn't have amazing high ISO capability, weighs more than my car and only has an average frame rate. Personally I did chose a 5D in preference, but that was mainly because of the weight and the 5D most certainly doesn't have the AF or metering of a 1 series.

Im not overly fussed about the weight, im currently using a d90 with grip and feel extra weight would help steady things a bit, though i understand that it will start to get tiring after a days shooting.

I take it that the 1d series has better AF and metering over the 5d series? not that AF matters much with macro but AF and metering are higher on my list than FPS.

Am i right in saying the 5d has better IQ than the 1Ds?

What about the 1Ds mk2 Its quite a bit more money over the 1Ds and 5d but is it worth it?
I think the 5d mk2 is a little Adventurous price wise at the moment.
