So allegedly this is the new Canon 24-70 mk2:

Is anyone else a little disappointed with the design? I'm sure the optics are excellent but, design-wise, this doesn't appeal to me at all.

It's partly the new barrel design which Canon are using which just looks 'cheaper' to me than previous lenses. I'm sure it's very well constructed but it just doesn't look as nice.

Mainly though it's the zoom mechanism and hood. I really liked the reverse-zoom of the 24-70 and how it meant the hood could be fixed to the body, as it meant the hood provided the best possible performance at both ends of the range and it protected the extending barrel from knocks. Both of these features have been lost.

I'd just spotted this on Canon Rumours myself.

Interesting that it's jumped up to an 82mm filter size, but kind of annoying as my 72mm filters fit most of my lenses.

Are you sure you can't reverse the lens hood?
It looks like it might be like the 70-200 mk2 where it has a little button that clips it into place.

There are some doubts as to whether this is a full production copy of the lens though, as it's also missing any markings.

But I agree with ElDude, I don't care what it looks like, this and a 5D mk3 are on my shopping list as soon as they are available.

That's what I was planning on doing, but I accidentally bought a resonator guitar, so I think I'll just have the lens this year :D

A fair bit of the cheap appearance of the lens is the greyness I feel, I just ran a quick curves layer over it:

and it looks a fair bit better imo. Still, doesn't quite have the tanky appeal of the current one, but then it makes no difference to me as I shoot primes in that range and I don't think I'll ever stop.

Lenses are for looking through not at! I do agree that the way the lens hood works on the current model is Fab. Plus the performance will have to be astounding before I'll upgrade-

Oh I'm sure the optics will be superb, I just think the loss of the current zoom/hood system is a bad thing.

Will be interesting to see how it improves on the current model and to what extent.

If this is true. I wont be getting it in a hurry, filters to change, lens hood doesn't seem optimal. I like the length of the current one, can get a good hold on it, this looks a little stubby,

I'm intrigued by the new 24mm and 28mm 2.8 IS primes. THey must be aimed at landscape photographers who have forgotten their tripod?

Press Release said:
Introducing the world's first wide-angle primes with IS

Canon today also launches the new EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM – the world's first 24mm and 28mm fixed wide-angle lenses to feature optical IS technology. Ideal for landscape and reportage, both lenses offer outstanding flexibility allowing photographers to shoot an even broader range of scenes and subjects – combining fast apertures with IS to enable sharp results when shooting handheld, even in low light conditions.

Offering an advantage of up to 4-stops over lenses without IS, both lenses are ideal for capturing more of the scene thanks to their wider focal lengths. Both feature a wide f/2.8 aperture, allowing photographers to explore shallow depth of field, or to shoot in lower-light conditions. Wide apertures and IS technology also make each lens ideal for shooting fast-moving subjects, while Canon's advanced IS technology is able to detect intentional panning movement and automatically switch from Normal IS mode to Panning IS mode – helping users to capture movement with greater accuracy.

Christ the pricing seems steep!

US prices

EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM $2299 (£1914.52 at current exchange rate)
EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM $849 (£536.47)
EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM $799 (£504.88)

German Prices

EF 24-70mm 1:2,8L II USM 2299 Euro (£1915)
EF 24mm 1:2,8 IS USM 829 Euro (£690)
EF 28mm 1:2,8 IS USM 799 Euro (£665)

I hope to god they don't just convert US Dollars to British Pounds!

I'm not really up with these high end zoom but is there any reason why IS is not incorporated on this?

The 24-70 is a big and heavy lens, Canon don't feel they can design a version with IS without it resulting in an even bigger and heavier lens.

I think prices also have to be taken with a pinch of salt, as Canons own list prices are always more expensive than what retailers tend to sell them for. It's also unlikely that retailers will want to drop the price of the current model, so once stocks dry up, perhaps the new lens will drop to a similarish price.

Looks like we got the smelly end of the stick again here in the UK.

WEX Price - £2299, yet again straight converstion from dollar to pound price.

The 'old' version retails for around £995. Two of them cost £1990.

The 24mm on WEX - £749 and the 28mm is £729!

Ok they're preorder prices but I doubt they will fall that much.

Interesting concepts non the less. A little pricy for some 2.8 primes, relative to the cost of the old Canon 24-70mm etc.
