Hi

I'm looking to buy the 24-70L to replace my EF-S 17-85. I know the EF-S is optimised for the crop sensor of the 60D but what I need to know is will 24mm on the 24-70 be the same as on the EF-S?

Or will the 24-70 be a lot less wide angle as it is not an EF-S lens

advice appreciated

On your 60D (crop sensor) the 24 - 70 will be 24 x 1.6 = 38.4mm up to 70 x 1.6 = 112 mm so you wont be as wide as your current lens.

If you need the focal length of 24-70, the closest thing that would come close would be the 17-55 F2.8. It's an EF-S lens but I've heard nothing but positive things about that lens.

Cheers Derek

Sory, what I meant was will there be a difference between the 2 lens' at the same zoom settings (quality aside)

basically will 24mm or 50mm etc appear the same on both lenses? Or does the EF-S lens negate the crop factor

I have that combo, the 24-70 will be around 38-112.

Even with the 17-85, you're effectively getting 27-136.

The fact that it's EF-S doesn't make a difference, it'll still be cropped.

So you'll lose out in width and reach, but gaining in image quality and a faster lens.

They will look the same bar slight lens differences such as focus breathing. The stated focal length on an EF-S lenses is the same as an EF lens.

Cheers guys

Order placed. Picking it up tomorrow.

Anyone want to buy and EF-S 17-85?

How much could I ask do you think?

Spoke to LCE and they offered me £100 which seems a little light for a 1 year old lens

I use a 24-70 on my 7D and love it, but there are times when 24mm just isn't wide enough and I'd not be without the 10-22 to cover those times.

Sell the lens privately (marketplace on here and other options). People like LCE are out to make a profit so will give you less.

If you want a constant f/2.8, there are Tamron and Sigma options for a crop. I own a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 non-VC that's fantastic! Very reasonably priced too. ~£200 second hand.

Or you can pay closer to 24-70mm money and get a EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS.

This is all if you don't see yourself going full frame in the near future of course. I assume not as you own a 60D? If you are, then a 17-40mm f/4 or 16-35mm f/2.8 may be a better option.

£800 new? where's that from then?

Seen a few overseas doing it for £800 but they add import duty to that.

I've been saving my tesco clubcard points and converted to J****** + a load of their vouchers for xmas an Birthday otherwise no way I could have afforded it.

I'll miss my 17-85 though, it was my first lens and I learned a lot from using it

Buying it in Chicago can't live how much cheaper it is here
