You can currently get a new 350D with the kit lens for about £350. I would check the auction sites for second hand price but i would guess about £250.

The kit lens is 18-55mm it not a great lens and gets a lot of stick but will allow you to take photo better than any point and shot camera. Also if you use it in middle apertures it almost as sharp as some of the £400 lens.

The kit lens is best suited for landscape work and as generally walk about lens. It has no macro capability and due to the wide aperture at 55mm it not very good for portraits. The limit you may come across with the lens is wide aperture as it will force you to either up the ISO or use flash a lot if your taking pictures of car shows & meetings indoors. You could partially get round this by buying a 50mm F1.8 but would cost you an extra £70.

The camera is easy to use and it does have a fully automatic setting if you really want to use it. I would however recommend reading up on photography and about shutter speed, ISO and aperture so that you get the best from the camera.

Should add i have 350D and think it's a great entry camera.

Quoted for the truth. I have one as well

Many Thanks for your reply , any samples :)
www.kmatt.co.uk - Fireworks + Black and White are all the Kit and I think Sunrise are the 50mm.

If I'd have done anything different, I'd have bought my 350d without the kit and spent the money on something a little better.

Other than that, fairly chuffed with the camera - mines a dust magnet though :(

Edit / just checked and Sunrise are a combination of the 50mm and the kit, first two are deff 50mm as I remember getting strange looks from the dog walkers as I was leaning out of the spare bedroom window in a dressing gown holding a DSLR...

Some great advice for beginner/novice SLR users. Isn't there some book that is recommended? "Understanding exposures for Digital SLRs" or something? Has anyone got the full name and author(s) or the ISBN so I can look the book up?

Hi there,

I have a 350D and kit lens - check my site - http://www.je-design.co.uk

Hit gallery, nearly everything in there was shot on mine with the kit lens.

As said, it's an excellent entry camera, the kit lens does get a lot of stick, but the only real place I find it suffers is low light conditions, forcing you to up the ISO.

Hold one before you buy it though, a lot of people complain about it's small size, for me it's perfect, but I have small hands :p

My blog - www.andybrock.co.uk :) All with 350d but the later ones are with a different lens. I would definately reccommend the camera, however some have said in the past that they have found it difficult to hold, as its one of the smaller sized slr cameras. Id reccommend going in to a local camera shot and having a feel of it first to make sure its comfortably in your hands. Hope this helps :)

I have a 400D which I believe is a similar if not the same size as the 350D. I came from an EOS 30 film camera (love this camera but no longer have the patience to wait for film to be developed!!) to a 300D and now to a 400D.

Yes the size was initially an issue but I have gotten used to it now. I am thinking of buying a battery grip when funds are willing (the wife! :D ) which will fill up my hand a bit more than it does now.

My wife has a 20D with a battery grip and a 28-135IS and I find this very heavy and quite uncomfortable to hold for long periods.

Another very happy 350D owner here :) I picked mine up with kit lens for a bargain £320 from that well known high-street photographic retailer just before I went on holiday a month or so ago.

You can have a look at my gallery here although I've also got a couple of other Canon lenses (35-105 and 75-300) from my previous EOS film camera.

Does the Canon 350D charge with normal recharge battery or AA`s ?

It uses NB-2L canon recharchables which are light but have relatively low capacity. Good thing is though - you can pick them almost buck a dozen all over the net, I carry two spares with me and that's easily couple thousand pictures...

I got a bargain B-grade 30D at the weekend, £549 with Kit from a major high street chain :D , and as a second step up it's fantastic.

I don't regret learning on the 350D though, it's the perfect introduction to DSLRs and a great way to learn the basics. If the 'bug' doesn't bit, then you haven't blown a fortune and still have a nice camera for snaps.

I will be sad to see mine sell TBH, but I can't afford the luxury of a spare body).

I would definietly go on a photography course, be a shame to use a nice camera and just not using it right (brother has same camera) and just taking naff shots not getting shutter/iso right.

I have a local photography shop and they do training in canon 350D 30D & photoshop cs which i will do , they said they would charge £40 per hour , my first sesson would be free

What the main difference between the Canon 30D & 350D ?
