I jumped ship from the 400d to 40d. Iam very happy so far

Very, will probably take a trip up town tomorrow for a wee shoot.

Anyone suggest well performing/spacious CF cards?

I buy either Lexar Pro or more recently Sandisk Extreme's never had a problem with any of them. I just bought a new 32GB Sandisk Extreme 60MB/s UDMA for £85 which I thought was good value.

I love my 40D. I upgraded from a 20D and that felt like a decent bump. Going from a xxxD I can imagine is a large difference in terms of ergonomics and feel.
