Well, looks like an upgrade from 350D is in order for some people!

Looks very good!

New 20D/30D etc style rubberised hand grip, LIVE VIEW and...

* 12.2 megapixel CMOS sensor
* SD/SDHC cards
* Larger viewfinder
* Live view mode, including contrast-detect AF
* Improved 9-point AF system
* Spot metering
* 3.0" LCD monitor
* Redesigned menus (including My Menu as seen in 40D)
* Slightly redesigned info display
* Continuous shooting at 3.5fps for up to 53 JPEG (6 RAW)
* ISO setting displays in viewfinder and ISO button
* New, larger, higher capacity battery
* 14 bit A/D converter and processing
* Multi-shot self-timer mode
* Highlight Tone Priority (from 40D)
* Auto Lighting Optimiser (boosts shadows after shooting)

Not sure about the SD card usage though...this might prove a bit of a problem but the other features are quite nice. I will probably end up stretching to a 30D though.

beat me to it! :mad:

must admit that the specs look very good for an entry level body.

2 new Pentax DSLRs plus 5 new Pentax lenses as well.

I just saw 2GB SD cards are around £5 on the Bay, looks like I may consider the 450D afterall!

Can't believe that this is so close in spec to a 40D. I would have thought they would still leave a big gap between their entry level and their mid level.
There is still quite a big gap between the 40D and the 5D, and then a huge gap between them and the 1 series. So why such a small gap (now) between the entry level and the 40D?

I would not be surprised if some people (who think Mpixels are god) will possibly go for this instead of a 40D, Canon could well be doing themselves out of some 40D sales.

40D is still a lot faster and better put together, depending on price they might actually boost 40D sales as if the two are as close as being speculated then people will buy the 40D as it's only slightly more expensive.

Who care abou the people who will buy it for the pixel count, thats there loss!

If this comes in at under £500 with the kit IS lens, then I think I will try to get it. It's really pushing me to make the switch to Canon.

Just a note: I think live view is a bit moot without being able to flick the screen out, thats the whole point to me; being able to the camera away from your eye to compose. Same on the 40D though I guess.

Looks good :)

Still think I'll go for a 40D rather than this when I upgrade, just seems like a logical step for me :)

Think it's a bit carp that it uses SD cards instead of CF. Means if I bought one I'd have to buy a load of new memory cards!!!!

For an entry level body, the spec on this 450D is excellent

It will be interesting to see how it performs when the detailed reviews start appearing

Looks like a pretty decent bit of kit! Not sold on the CF --> SD change, though, and I don't think people upgrading are going to be best pleased either.

It's good that it comes with the IS lens, though. It's much better than the previous kit lens.

The spec was pretty much what I was expected apart from the SD inclusion.

I've been expecting the move to SD for a while now but I expected it to filter in from the top range cameras.

Can't believe that this is so close in spec to a 40D. I would have thought they would still leave a big gap between their entry level and their mid level.

The gap is still big enough. The AF system is better in the 40D, you get some weather sealing, 6.5fps, larger buffer, better size, better build, the wheel of power and ISO3200.

A nice camera indeed, not fussed about them moving to sd/sdhc as they are quite small, and most new things now are starting to use shdc.

Bigger battery is good to, im sure the next 50D etc will use it to.

In the Box
Expected to ship in April 2008 the Canon Rebel XSi camera is available in body-only configuration which includes a rechargeable battery pack and charger, USB and video cables, a neckstrap, an EOS Solutions Disk CD, and a 1-year Canon U.S.A., Inc. limited warranty. The new camera will also be available in a lens kit version which includes everything in the body-only kit plus the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens. The two versions carry estimated retail prices of $799.99 and $899.99, respectively.

That spec seems spectacular for a entry level model. Price wise I'd love this to come in towards the price of a second hand 30d.

When the 400D lens kit came out it was £530 ish i think, and dropped to £500 within a month or so, 18 months on its £390.

You can get refurbed 30D,s for £450 or below with 12 month canon warranty.

I got a refurb 400D lens kit with 12 month warranty for £260 last month.

Looks good. Quite cool that they included a rubberised grip as well, as that should hopefully improve the ergonomics that the 300D/350D/400D lacked imo. also nice to see them including a 3" screen on their entry level model. Eventually there is going to have to be alimit to how big a screen can get. Go on Nikon, can you fit a 4" screen in the D40X replacement? :D

Shame they didnt put a higher res screen in though, im sure nikon will put the D300 screen in there entry level upgrade.

Canon obviously do as that is exactly the market they are aiming this camera at.

I know that Canon care but a lot of people who should know better have been making a big song and dance about the jump to 12mp. If anything it will probably decrease image quality as the noise level will go up unless they have done more than some minor works on the sensor.

I think the biggest impact will be on the competition, as an entry level DSLR spec it is very impressive and will be hard to better, the smaller makers like sony and olympus have been making ground by offering more features than Canon at a better price which they may now be hard pushed to do.

I look forward with interest to Nikons response as this looks to have put a big distance bettween itself and e D40x in terms of features so they need to pull a pretty impressive rabit out of the hat!

This really is a big issue for me. It seems the camera manufacturers are cramming in massive screens at the expense of ergonomics. Take for example the 40D, a brilliant camera but the menu buttons have been moved from the excellent location on the 30d to the bottom which makes them trickier to reach.
