I've been contemplating a DSLR for a while and watching the members market, reading reviews etc.

Just searching a 550D and it comes up on ebay as a
Canon EOS KISS X4 / 550D + EF-S 18-55mm IS Kit

with a price of £372, which is at least £100 less that a uk source for the same thing. Source is hong kong.

What are the drawbacks of buying it from them?

I don't believe Canon honour foreign warranties here.

However apparently Digital Rev offer their own qualified repairers to carry out warranted repairs.

Given how much less it is I think its a risk that I'm prepared to take though, they do warrant it for 12months and in my experience if something is going to go wrong it goes wrong in the first month or two.

I guess the risk is being charged import tax perhaps.

/edit which looks like 5% plus a handling fee no doubt, still £379(+import) against £459

I think I need to stop looking, now found a 500D that looks like a really good buy and everyone here has good things to say about the 500D.

I think the 550D is worth the extra £50? or so more than the 500D. 30fps 1080p rather than 20fps. Microphone jack. Same sensor as the 7D meaning slightly better ISO performance. 1 stop higher max ISO. Those are the main differences.
I guess if you're not too bothered about video then the 500D could be for you.

I bought a 500D new late 2010 and after a few months regretted it and wished I went second hand and got myself a 40d.

Now after getting used to it learning I love it and is more than enough for me just now (I don't need it for video) It's a great camera so the 550D should be pretty dam good to.

Just my input anyway so good luck with it.

Ah interesting, thanks. Just now trying to figure out the different features between the models.
I doubt I will use the video much, its all about the pictures but having said that it would make sense to spend just a little more now to get that much better camera. I've been wanting a camera like this for a good few years.

Reading up now before I take the plunge :)

With regards to buying from hong kong I would stay away from ebay where you will have no warranty whatsoever. I bought my 60D from procamerashop (which seemed to have a very good rep) and got about £300 off. I have a 1 year warranty with procamerashop and although I have not yet needed to use their services there have been many reports of other who have and had no problems. To be honest, for the money off it was a risk I was willing to take :)

I bought my 7D from digitalrev (body only) for £850ish but had to pay £15 tax or something but I got it and all works ok so far lol hopefully It wont ever have to be sent back.
