In the next few weeks I will be looking at upgrading my camera body to replace my 400D which has served me well as a introduction into the SLR world. I have dabbled since getting it and feel it is time to switch up and get a little more serious, get out more often and practise more.

I have recently come into a little spare cash and I was wondering what you guys feel would be the more informed choice. I lurk here often and post very little but from the work I see posted, I respect the opinions of the forum.

Before I ask I would like to state I have no interest in moving to full frame, I have invested a little too much in glass that I would not be able to replace for some time and I am happy with what I have.

I am tossing a coin between a 50D and a 7D. The 50D would allow me wiggle room for maybe a new lens but I always have a little voice that says 'go the whole hog' when it comes to big spends.

Does anyone have opinions in the difference of these two bodies and which way would you swing given the choice?

The 50D sucks. You'd be better off with a pre-owned 40D and some glass, or a 7D.

Is there actually anything majorly wrong with the 50D, or is it just not a sensible buy because it doesn't really offer anything over a second hand 40D?
I know that apparantly the images have a lot of iso noise when compared with the 40D, but its also a higher res and could arguably just be scaled down and look as good as the 40D?

I was in two minds whether or not to go for the 50D over the 40D but after reading several real world tests it would appear the 50D is slightly ahead of the 40D at 800 and above.

Certainly its no worse.

I would personally go for a 2nd hand 40D over a 50D.
I would also go for a 7D over a 40D, if I could afford it.

Out of interest, what lenses do you currently have that are stopping you going full frame? Also, what do you like shooting?

Money is not a problem in affording a 7D body luckily enough and the Lens's I have which I don't really want to swap are the Canon 10-22 & the 17-55 2.8.

I am still torn, I read lots of good things today about the 7D but there is a voice telling me a 50D but some money towards new glass is just as good.

My photography is mainly landscape stuff and I am just getting into portrait more which is completly new to me.

Try and have a play with a 7D if you can, I had a toy with a mates and it's quite a complicated beast, seems to have endless option that were quite frankly overwhelming.

Having said that the shots and high iso ability i've seen are quite impressive, but I was more than happy to move to a 50D from a 30D given the price I paid for it.

If landscape and portrait are your thing then I would seriously recommend reconsidering full frame. Why not sell the lens and get some replacement L glass. You might be spending out a bit more, but it's an upgrade, so you may as well make the most of it.

I think if I made the move to replace the body and my glass I may end up a single man. A body upgrade she is ok with as my little 400D has served its time and paid for itself but the go the whole hog will be pushing it. As stated I am very happy with the lens' I have at the moment so the body is all I want to consider currently.

Going to go check out the feel of a 7D tomorrow in town after work and hopefully wont get tempted to try anything else ;)

1d mkII [n] (so long as A3 is big enough and you don't need more than ISO 1250).

It's where I think I'm heading.

For me it's a tough call 5d/1d, IQ/AF. Before anyone comments can't afford a 1ds.

I would go either to a 5D if you are into static or 1d markII for dynamics

Wouldn't really bother with 50d/7d as personally I think the viewfinders are too small tbh.

Go the whole 9 yards so you dont have to upgrade again. 7d appears to be very good though if you have excellent glass and need the reach of the crop sensor.

Well after sampling a few cameras in town today combined with the comments here I have decided to push the budget and go full frame. Gonna stick my glass for sale this week and once the money comes back in, make the upgrade.

I will be limited to one lens to begin with because of the initial cost increase from a 7D for 5DmkII and thinking on the 24-70L to cover me for landscapes and mid range bits.

All I can say is damn you all :p

24-70 on FF will be like having the 17-40 on the 7D aprox.
So very capable for landscapes.

Yeah thats what I figured and after reading lots of good things about that glass it seems like the logical choice and will suit all my immediate needs. The only consideration may be a longer zoom for the future, but thats not something I am worried about at this moment.

I dread telling the misses.

Nice :)

I went for the 7D in the end as I like shooting sports etc. so the hi-speed and extra reach with the crop were the deciding factor. I must say though that I haven't ruled out picking up a second hand 5D somewhere along the line (certainly not this year though!) as well. I do like portrait photography... I'll probably find that the 7D will do me well though.

The misses? :D:D:D (sorry, just the spelling)

I'm a pain and always crop up in these threads. Check out the 5D classic. Then you might be able to sneak a 70-200 or 135L in the budget.

Or consider an older 17-35L or 16-35L with a 70-200L. I reckon it would be better than a single 24-70. (But I don't really like the 40-60mm [25-35mm in 1.6x] focal length anyway)

 I always type it like that for some reason, an old habit I can not shake :D (and I'm a teacher lol).

You raise and interesting point with the lens suggestions which I will look into, thanks. I did own a 70-200 F4L but sold it through lack of use, so not exactly in a rush to replace it.
