Looking at getting my first DSLR and seen the Canon EOS 350D for £200 second hand with a Canon 18-55mm EF-S lens or should I get a new 40D or maybe get a different camera altogether.

Growse has the two most important questions but I will tag on how deep are your pockets? No point blowing all your money on a body and not being able to buy a lens or two.

Yea...if it is your first SLR then get the 350 and a lens or two extra....the lenses will last you a lifetime and you'll be able to experiment a lot more with them!

Why do you feel you want a DSLR?

What sort of pictures do you want to take?

I want a manual focus camera and also be able to add different lenses like wide angle etc

I'm not made of money but can afford lenses when i progress and when I need them. ;)

Also looking at the nikkon D40x

In my opinion, it's better to have quality glass than a top camera, I'd spend more on a lens than the actual body if I wanted quality. You need to think about whether you want a tripod, flash and bag too, all added accessories such as the glass which it really pays to buy well.

Ive been told to get a 350D and thats what im doing :D Feb 22nd ill be able to afford it :D

It will be ordered once i arrive home from work.

With me not long after, and ill have some beautiful shots of where i live taken.

Actually cant wait! What a relaxing, independant, lovely hobby to have.

Theres no one answer to this.

I was thinking about something similar not so long ago and came to the conclusion Id buy the 40D if faced with the situation again. Much like buying a large screen TV for £350 Vs £800, Id happily pay for a higher spec midrange model. A dSLR camera is a more personal object, that Id wanna keep for years and years - Im not someone who upgrades that regularly.

However, there is an argument for buying the lower cost option to start off with, then upgrading at a later date. It all depends how much you want to spend.

The Nikon D40x isn't a good choice imho. It doesn't have a motor in the body so some lenses are manual focus only. If you decide to buy Nikon look further up the range even if that means 2nd hand.

anyone's that stand out that you can suggest

I'm a Canon user so I can't really give you a particually good run down of the Nikon range but I would think the D80 would be a good choice. On the Canon side a 400D or a refurbed 30D.

I really don't think the lack of inbuilt focus motor is a reason not to get the D40x.

I think MK has proven that you can achieve incredible results even with this 'deficiency'.

Anyway Willis said he doesn't mind manual focus. ;)

In answer to your other question about Nikons, you could get a second hand D50 for decent money and that does have a built in focus motor or you could go up the range with a second hand D70 or D80.
