Looking at buying this in jan, it will be my first SLR. have seen one for about £340.
1) Can I get it anywhere cheaper?
2) Is this a good camera for the price or is there one out there which is better for the same money, have read a few mags and it seems to get a good reputation.
3) Apart from the obvious memory card and carry case what else will I need to get me going, not looking at any new lenses for the moment.

Thanks in advance for any help

1) Try going between different shops. Tell them what price you've seen it at at see if you can knock them down any further. They usually do if you push them enough (in a friendly way of course).
2) Not sure, I haven't been into photography that long myself so I probably shouldn't try and give advice on stuff like that.
3) I'd get a UV filter to leave on your lens all the time to protect it. It shouldn't make any difference to the picture, but just makes things a hell of a lot cheaper/easier if you happen to get dirt all over the lens or scratch it somehow. You just need to buy a relatively cheap filter instead of a brand new lens :)

I'm hoping a little sale in jan will bring the price down and I was going to stick with the price i have, get jessops to match it and throw in the memory card and maybe carry case rather than try get them to reduce the price. a UV filter sounds a good idea though I can see what you mean about protecting the lens.

Cheers

Think they're competitors now that OcUK stock cameras. :(

I bought a 450D recently as my first SLR and I'm chuffed with it. :) Seems to be a good starter level camera from what I've heard.

Maybe a tripod would be a good idea, helps out in lots of circumstances...can be had for £20 - £30
If you get a 450d with a 12 month warranty, I believe that would be better to a newbie than a 30d with no warranty....the op would probably miss the more advanced features to start with anyway!

450D is a great starter camera - i started on its younger brother the 400D with in a years or os i had taken 11K pics with it.

a tripod is a must really i usually travel with mine all the time. Its also good for keeping crowds out of your way!

I am glad you are sticking with the kit lens for now as i feel its a great way to learn without adding more lenses to the confusion

Check out the book 'Understanding Exposure' it toaught me the basics and it makes you think then just referring to a manual or something like that!

This is just the thread i'm after, also looking to buy a 450D as a starter DSLR before christmas. It's really inspired me to give photography a go after seeing some of the brilliant photo's taken by some of you guys.

You have? New?
I'd be interested to see someone push somewhere like Jessops down to anything even close to £340.

yeah, my mum found one online for £390 but cannon are doing £50 cashback on them. after all the comments I think I'm definitely going for the 450d then and will have a look at getting a filter and tripod to go with it. cheers for the help guys

Email in Trust!!.. :)

is that price body only or with the kit 18-55mm IS lens?
I would be very surprised if you can get a body + kit lens for £390 before cashback from a legit UK seller - mid £420s is about the lowest that I know of.

As for whether there is better for the price it depends upon whether it suits you both ergonomically & for your specific photo needs.
I suggest that you visit a decent photo shop & try the different entry DSLRs from the main manufacturers (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax) to find what suits you.

Really! I'd be grateful if you shared this nugget of info!?, although I share the same concerns as BUFF above....

damn, missed the boat, the camera has now gone back up to £384 after cashback, but yeah it was with the lens. from a well known camera company. although you can get them from a shady company for £369 but the company is american and they are trying 2 disguise themselves as uk, u get him with a 20% charge when it gets to the country and really bad reviews about service and returns. the company is called 'bitesize deals' I know they are a competitor technically but I'm badmouthing them so it should be ok
