So, the whole 'press the button half-way and then half-way more to take a picture' thing is really annoying sometimes but I learnt to live with it, but having to tell others how to take a photo with it is annoying.

This will become more of an issue when I 'as a lovely foreigner' go to live in China this August, and added to that the language barrier of explaining how to use it will make it an impossible task to get a China man to take a photo of me.

So, how the hell do I kill this little issue? I.e. Just press the button and the camera shoots without any lag.

Thanks,

Phil.

I don't think you can. Every compact digital camera I've come across needs the shutter depressing for it to focus before you take the photo. You can get ones with literally zero shutter lag, but they still need to be focussed iirc.

How about getting a little sticker that says how to press the button in chinese and just pointing it out to the person.

This is bugging me, it's great for when I'm taking my time with a photo but when you just want a quick snap it's a right pain.

I used to have a compact APS film jobby with auto focus and that never bothered whirring and clicking for a couple of seconds. Saying that, my new IXUS 800 (smug smug) is a lot quicker.

Just look for someone who looks like they know how to operate a camera, and also signal for them to take 2 photos, that way there is a greater chance they are in focus

If I remember correctly (my family has an A85) if you just press the button fully it'll focus then take the picture... just hold the pose for a second or so more than usual when someone's taking a photo.
