Can't access old HDD files even after taking ownership

My friends laptop died, I have his hdd connected to my machine via usb 3.0 to sata cable. The drive and it's root directory are visible, I have taken ownership of all the folders and subs and granted full control access, however I cannot open any of the folders - permission denied error. I'm signed in to my machine with admin rights and have restarted the machine after taking ownership of the old drive but no joy. Can anyone offer me any further advice, thanks in anticipation

You tried with a Linux live cd?
That's always worked for me in the past.

You gave me an idea though and it worked, I opened an elevated cmd and copied the files via the command prompt window to my C: and I have access to them now ! Thanks
