I recently started gettin an error everytime i tried to shut my computer dow.Something along the lines of run32.dll .Cant remember now.So i went to windows updates to downoad the latest files (win defender etc)I restarted to install the updates and now it wont conect to the internet :(
Ive run avg 8.5 and it found a few nasties but got rid of them.I used ad aware as well.
My laptop connects fine to my router.Does any1 have any suggetsions.how easy is it to find my system restore point or wipe my comp clean. My copy of xp is in a hidden partition. My comp is slow at the moment so a wipe might be for the best.

Thanks all

I have an athlon 64 3000+ 1gb ram ,win xp service pack 3.

First things to check. Does the PC have an IP address? You can check by running ipconfig from a command prompt. This will give you the IP address, the subnet mask and the Gateway IP address. Secondly can you ping the Gateway?

Yeah it has a static ip address.I need it for a game it wouldnt conect without it.It has been static for over a year tho..When i run ipconfig it only stayed open for 20 secs then went off.I tried again and it went off after a split second :( .How do i ping the gateway???

You need to run ipconfig from the command prompt.
Start>Run>cmd
then run ipconfig, it should stay on screen then.

You then ping the gateway from the command prompt as well. If you are already doing this and the window is shutting down then you've got more than a network problem.

ping <ip address>

ie.
c:\Documents and Settings\brandond>ping 192.168.10.250

damn this is annoying.I hate using my laptop. How do i check my dns server settings???
Ok managed to check that and i have none

shares are just folders you've set to share and are accessible/viewable to other people on your network

As for the DNS

If the laptop is working ok on the net, then on the laptop go to start - run - type cmd and ok that - in the command prompt winodw type ipconfig /all . this will list all your network settings/addresses etc currently on the laptop. basically you want to see what your laptops DNS is, then just set your main PC to use the same DNS

You can edit the DNS settings if you go to start - control panel - network connections (assuming its win XP, if its vista then it'll be under network sharing center - manage connections) - right click ony our network adapter and go to properties - double click on tcp/ip (IPV4 on vista), then put the check in "use the following..." and then enter the DNS address

From the few home networks i've seen teh DNS is usually the same as the default gateway address, or in the case of virginmedia something like preferred: 194.168.8.100 alternate: 194.168.4.100
