What is a "NTL broadband 3500"?
How are you connecting 'it' to your PC, USB or ethernet?
Installed al the drivers for your hardware?

sorry its a cable modem 351000 connected via usb

Pretty much. You won't need drivers for the modem, though you will for the network card.
You might have to switch the modem off between disconnecting/reconnecting it though.
