'Cap' on immigration is no longer in place

What they should do is retrain the people already living here..problem solved.

and even assuming they have the inherent intelligence required, what do we do in the SIX YEARS it takes to get someone the a-levels required for, and then to complete, say, an engineering degree?

Yes just like that, lets take Johnny off the dole and train him to be a doctor, problem solved.

And why not? are you against people doing better then you? sounds like it to me.
You should go back to the car forum, they are used to your crap.

In a lovely country where everybody wants to work and be a productive member of society this would work. Unfortunately this is England.

Unfortunately the world isn't like that. The people who genuinely want to work are out numbered by those who are happy on benefits ten to one.

And lets all remember - There is not much stopping the people here who are SO eager to work from retraining to do a job that can't be done cheaper and probably more effective by some bloke fresh off of the boat. Unfortunately very few actually do this. I guess sitting at home and moaning about immigrants and cashing the gyro every Thursday is easier.

Well lets see.. I know a guy who never had any a-levals. But he is high up in EA
and he only started out at Kalamazoo in brum doing data input.
His son done voice overs in EA games ;)

Some jobs *require* qualifications to do them. Medicine, Engineering, Architecture, to pick just 3.

Yeah you can get on by being a good coder for example. But someone who is long term on the dole has already demonstrated they dont have the motivation. People who succeed in this way, are by nature self starters.

.

You do know there are more people on the sick the on the dole don't you?
I think given the chance of a good job anyone would have a go.

Did you seriously just post that?

I mean... really?

I'm posting 'crap' for suggesting you cant just take Mr Average Unemployed and turn him into a doctor?

Have you *any* idea how much time, money, effort and intelligence is required to start from nothing and end up as a qualfied doctor?

It is a cap on skilled non-EU immigrants. Many of these are skilled individuals who are hired in by companies who cannot find the skills locally. If companies here cannot find enough 'people to do the job' they go elsewhere.

Bu where's the incentive for British companies to train anyone when they can employ foreign labour at cheaper rates with no need for training ?

I've recently graduated, have a long employment history and can't get a job as I don't have enough experience in the field I'm trying to enter - no doubt a job I'm perfectly capable of doing will go to one of these immigrants while I stay unemployed...

See you pick DOCTOR..why not IT or electrician or Corgi Gas or welding.
CNC programers\ops.

Me and two mates was taught how to program a £1mil robot at Cosworth(worcester) in 4 months by the germans.
And people used to be retrained in the UK. But it all got stopped for some unknow reason.

Do you really think the British WANT any more people coming into the country?

You're not attempting to speak for all of Britain are you? I'm British (my passport confirms this in case I was in any doubt) and I'm pretty sure you aren't speaking for me.

We have over 2.4 million out of work.
So dont come to me with we need skilled xyz people, as we probably have them or we can train them to suit the job.

It always been business getting staff on the cheap.

Even assuming we can train up people to do the skilled jobs then there is probably going to be a fairly long lead time between identifying a suitable candidate and them actually being able to do the job - given of course that skilled jobs tend to require training, unskilled jobs require much less as a general rule. What do you propose we do in the meantime while we're waiting for this group of future skilled workers?

I'll make this clear, I'm in no way against the retraining of people who are unemployed but a blanket ban on skilled workers who can fulfil a (short-term) need may not be the best way to solve the problems of demand exceeding supply.

Because I'm talking about SKILLED MIGRATION and a Doctor is an example of a highly skilled profession for which there is a shortage in the UK, which is being filled with foreign migrants as a result.

Fitting gas boilers isnt quite on the same page.

It takes YEARS to turn an unskilled labourer into a skilled worker.

The reason this country isn't creating its own skilled workers is because of the parasitic financial sector. Do you realise how many engineering, physics, and maths students end up working in the City adding literally nothing to the economy? The stock market, while it USED to be about creating innovation, is now just a massive casino and a parasitic drain on society. You think our universities aren't good? Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial are WORLD CLASS universities, but students from there are usually destined to be working in finance.

Of course, you do need very bright people in the financial sector to allocate money to the right companies that have the best chance of succeeding, but imagine if the majority of Physics and Maths graduates from the top universities actually used their skills in a positive way for society? IE: DRIVING INNOVATION

It is quite ironic that it is innovation that also fuels profits in the financial sector, they are sort of shooting themselves in the foot.
