Hi,

I'm wondering if there is an offical link to the statistics of road users who have car accidents for each age group. Where can I find these statistics? I keep hearing they are the reason for my huge insurance costs but yet to actually see the statistics for myself.

Cheers.

try statistics.gov.uk

Looked through that, but cannot find the actual statistic for a particular age group that says how many accidents occured (ie - 16-25 years : X accidents) and what % of that age group had an accident. Anyone have a direct link to it?

From a quick, 5 minute glance
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/Cci/nscl.asp?ID=7933
Those are 2001/2002 though

I have seen that and the age groups are pointless for me as they are:
0-15
16-59
60+.

I need it more detailed such as 16-25, 26-40, etc. Reason being insurance for me (18) costs around £2000 whereas if I was 30 and the same lack of experience (no claims bonus) it would be atleast half that amount. Just want to see some actual statistics to justify me buying insurance.

Just done a quote for myself (with pass plus) and came to a suprising £1773.33. Then I made myself 10 years older, and all of a sudden it comes down to £609.67. Isn't that amazing. They can **** themselves if these insurance companys think they can take this sort of money off youngsters, without actually showing any useful statistics, no wonder some many people go without insurance. They should be locked up for being ageist. /rant.

Lol.

Are you actually saying you need to see statistics to prove that inexperienced drivers are more likely to lose control of their vehicle?

No I don't, I need to see statistics to prove that young drivers are more likely to lose control of their vehicle, untill I see that written down offically, I will believe they are made up to make youngsters pay way more than they should (ie - fraud).

Yeah you tell them! Now, go get back on your bike.

Rolleyes back at you. It's a valid complaint. Everyone says the young'uns are statistically more likely to have accidents, but where's the evidence? Is it not possible the insurance companies are exploiting an urban myth to boost their profits?

No you don't... but you do?

Contradiction much?

Ever heard of gaining experience? You don't magically gain experience when you pass your test.

Thankyou to those who agree.

@ paradigm - what about in-experienced drivers at the age of 30??? Their insurance is more than half the amount I pay, yet with the same DRIVING experience. I am yet to see these "statistics" and untill I see them I think its a scam from the insurance companys.

While I agree totally Jez, He makes a good point. I would like to see one of these insurance companies release a statistic that shows I am a true 40x greater risk/greater value than my mum! :D

Not sure that i believe that multiple given shopping around for both parties, even at a £100 quote for your mum you would need to be £4000! The divide is 10* at most IME between best and worst and tbh i could believe that as a genuine stat. :)

The multiples are not huge, i think i would definitely want 10* the premium over a middle aged woman to cover all liability for a new driver for example! Insurance is priced against stats and stats alone.

A 30 year old who's just passed his test will have just as much driving experience as a 17 year old who's just passed his test. It's a valid point but to be honest I really don't need to see any evidence to know that younger drivers are more likely to suffer a lack-of-talent moment

Can you genuinely not see how a 30yo ON AVERAGE is likely to be less than half the risk than a 17 year old all other things being equal?

Stats? Stats?? What are these stats you keep talking about, the made up stereotype ones that aren't actually written down offically?

Likewise you don't magically gain experience when you get to blow 30 candles out of your birthday cake instead of 18...

What I Don't understand is that many 16 year olds in North America will pay an utter FRACTION to insure a 'proper' car compared to what an 18 year old will pay to insure a 1.1 Saxo over here. On top of that, I VERY rarely hear from the US based car forums I visit of a 16/17/18 year old members stacking their e30/e34/Supra into a wall. Granted you'll hear some high profile accidents, the girl in her father's corvette, the bloke in the M5 and Nick Hogan, but for the most part having cheap insurance on "tasty" cars hasn't caused a mass genocide of teenagers.
