hello all

I want to upgrade the speakers and headunit in my alfa 147.
i have a budget of 400.
im a complete novice when it comes to car audio.

I want to upgrade the 4 main speakers and 4 tweeters, which i belive are 16.5 and 1" for the tweeters, any one with an alfa Is this correct? i want to keep the speakers in there original position.
i have read that some speakers will not fit as they are too deep, with out taking the current ones out i have no way of finding out the maximum depth of speaker i can use, so if any one knows please tell.

ive been looking at the FLI Integrator COMP6.
quick question here. whats the difference between component speakers and full range speakers?

i want a head unit that has USB so was looking at the Sony CDX-GT50UI.
because i dont want a sub and amp at the moment i am planning on running all 8 speakers of the head unit, is this ok?

Cant think of any more questions at the mo, just want your opinions on what i have said, or if you can advise on something better.
thanks.

My personal preference would be to forget the rear speakers, leave them as is and spend the money on amping the fronts.
If you want rear fill then just run the existing rears off the headunit feed.

Edit:

Also looking at the headunit you may want to consider something else if you plan on amps etc (either now or later). It only has one output on it for rear or sub switchable.
On CAD there is a Blaupunkt, Clarion and Kenny in your price range all of which have two auxiliary outputs on them which will go someway towards an upgrade path. Blaupunkt would need an extra lead though to allow the amp connection if memory serves me.

This little lot I just knocked up. Not sure on the head unit quality as its not a unit I have listened to but then recent Sonys are not up to much either IIRC.

Clarion DXZ578RUSB - Headunit
Alpine MRP-F242 - Amp, 4 channel will do your fronts and can bridge the other two channels for driving a sub at later date if desired.
Infinity Reference 6510cs - Component front speakers. Had a set of these myself in my Civic and they are good speakers for the money IMO.

That is just shy of £300, you would need a few quid for some amplifier wiring and maybe a fitting adapter for the speakers and headunit (I dunno what the Alfa may or may not need). You would end up with maybe another 50 to 60 quid left to either bribe a mate to help you install it with, go up a little on the headunit or have a night at the pub :)

Amping the front speakers is the single best gain you can make over a standard system IMO. I done several with just a new headunit, subs and front component speaker sets. When I amped the fronts on my teg it was a much better sound than anything I done before

Yep, for £400 you could get a very very decent system if you buy second hand (www.talkaudio.co.uk is a very good site/trading area to get stuff from).

For about £450 I got a set of Genesis Audiophile 16 componants, a rockford fosgate (RF) stereo amp, a RF punch amp in a custom sealed enclosure and a mono RF amp, all of which are just sitting in my shed at the moment - looking to sell them actually :p ;)

I fitted the stereo amp under my passenger seat and disconnected the rear parcel shelf speakers, fitted the tweaters in the A-pillars and it sounded absolutely top notch - Contrary to what people think, no rears are NOT a problem at all - the car is 100% emersed in sound from the front and the bass coming from the boot.

Definately better than I thought it was going to be.
