Just had a phone call from the in-laws who are out trying to get a new car sorted today.

I'd previously taken my father-in-law around all the local garages over the last couple of weekends, and he finally found a 55 plate Corolla (:p) he really liked at £7.5k.

Anyway, they went back to the dealership today to talk money, and from what I can gather the conversation went something along the lines of:

Mother-in-law: "We like that car but don't wanna spend that much, how about £xxxx" (don't know how much they offered).

Salesman: "I'll go have a word with the sales manager!" (predictably)

Salesman on return: "Actually we had the price wrong on that car, it should be £8.5k, but we'll sell to you at £7.5k as a sign of good faith"

Utter ********! What so it's been on the forecourt for at least a week with the price wrong by £1000? Yeah right! They've just seen an older couple
looking for a car, seen ££ signs, and tried to pull a fast one.

I'm really glad they phoned me, I'm pretty sure they would have gone with it had I not exploded on the phone. I told them to walk away, got a funny feeling the salesman might suddenly be able to do something with the price.

Just like the old "kitchen quote" routine. Guy quotes you 5k for a kitchen that he wants 4k for.... you haggle and he finnaly lets you have it for £4,300 or something. You think you have got one over and he thinks you are a sucker! both winners :p

Similar with double glazing. I was originally quoted £8k for my windows, ended up paying less than £2k

Just spoke to them again, it turned out to be the old switcheroo...

"Sorry about the price error on that car folks, but I do have one for about the price you want over here..." salesman points to dusty old jalopy in the corner

Alarm bells should most definitely be ringing.

Do you really want to give these dodgy people money? I'd advise the in-laws to go find a car elsewhere - speaks volumes for their customer service!

Something I found a bit of when I was looking for cars was a price of £xxxx being shown on autotrader or their website. Turn up and the price has risen by £300 to £700 on the screen

A normal dealer will ALWAYS initially quote well above price just to see what the reaction is, they know damn well that the world is full of numties who will just pay up no questions asked. If they want to haggle then they can bump him down to what he want for it anyway ( including the profit of course ).

The only way you are gonna get a car on the cheap is if its something they want rid of as its been there ages and is losing value, in which case you may get it as low as cost, or something thats got a problem and he wants rid ;)

When we got our 2001 focus collection the dealer wanted 5k for it ( it was mint condition with only 20k miles and full service history- this was 3 years ago ) and i just laughed and walked away. Next day he phones me and says he would "let it go for 3,700". The place was a dealership in wilmslow that mainly sold posh motors like converables and sports cars, this focus had been a trade in by some rich kid upgrading. I said id think about it and then the next day he said "okok look i really want this car gone as i need the space i only have a small forecort and i have 3 new cars coming in later today... make me an offer!" i said i can rustle up 3,200 in cash today... he said fine and that was that :p he must have given the kid peanuts on the trade in and just wanted rid of it so as to not scare off the posh people with an ugly ford on his forecourt.

The car has been A1 ever since and i intend to drive it to its death and get my full 3k's worth from it!

Absolutely, they've left well alone now. Thing is, this was Brooklyn, and a pretty major dealership at that. Just makes you wonder how much BS they get away with with unsuspecting trusting members of the public.
