Old Mondeo or nearly new, I'm certain my friend won't be interested. Plus they depreciate pretty horrendously. He still likes his sporty hatchbacks, and only really likes the looks of the 3 series and A4. Yes, what the car looks like is important to him (his gf is an influence too!).

Good shout on the Edition 30 with DSG, I had forgot about that special edition. Are there any other special editions that are worth knowing about, for the Audi? Quattro worth having? Also no opinions on the 1 series?

6 grand in change and a whole lot of fun! Running costs not that bad, MPG is more than reasonable, definitely faster than his MG, smaller than a 3 series, does not meet the age requirement but then the S has remained as near as dammit the same since the facelift in 04.

Only concern might be his driving experience and ability to insure.

I would be a bit deflated to have £15k on offer and come out with an average hatch. But maybe that suits his driving if all he wants is a motorway commute.
