Just got my renewal quote through today, and it's a corker - 72% increase on last year. No changes in my circumstances since last year. Their excuse - increase in the base rates.

I put it to the forum - truth or rubbish?

I'm off to check some comparison websites that don't have stupid opera singing adverts.

They pretty much always quote you a ridiculous renewal quote in the hope that you're someone who can't be bothered to look around for insurance and just pay whatever they want.

I've found the renewal quote is always higher... 9 times out of 10 people will just accept it and keep paying and the insurance company's up for massive profit. Ring around (even call your insurance company) and you'll usually end up paying less than the previous year.

Like I'm not going to notice a £300+ increase!

Called them to discuss it - they knocked over £250 off which I'm mulling over.

My renewal quote this time around was the cheapest I could get anywhere. I even got a quote with the same insurance company making the fake Tom who also happens to live at my house a day younger than me. This usually works when you ring them up and explain what you have done. Did this for a family friend last year. However it couldnt touch my renewal quote for some reason, neither could anyone else. So this years insurance (2 months ago) was a massive 5% cheaper :(

EDIT : That was with Elephant, who like above are the same group as admiral.

I found that with Admiral my renewal price has been pretty much un-beatable, no matter how much checking I do.

I've not moved in the last few years as the renewal was always within £10 of a cheapest price elsewhere. Not worth the bother of proof of no claims sent on for that.

Holy crap, did a test quote on my CTR about 6 months ago, it came back around £900 when i need to renew.....about a month ago it came back at around £1000....just done a quote now and the best i got was £1500

Don't pay it, shop around! I saved over a grand doing so when I got my renewal through.

My renewal from Admiral just dropped through the letterbox last week.

From £199 up to £275. So I ran some quotes through, Fortis came in cheapest for me at £166. Elephant next at £180. Rang up the renewals line to see if they could match either of these prices, got through to a girl in the Swansea office, she said they could match Elephant as they are a sister company, the woman YAWNED at me at full volume down the phone while I looked for the Elephant quote reference. Nice. This annoyed me so I said I'd check for the reference later and call back as this woman clearly did not want to be taking my call.

Called back later, got through to their Indian call centre, could barely understand the Americanised English the woman was attempting to speak, told her I wished to cancel, she made absolutely zero attempt to tell me the benefits of their policy, no attempt to match on price or compromise on service, just told me to post back the certificate and "is there anything else I can help you with?"

Not really, no. Now with Fortis and paying less than last year.

my quote was £100 more this year, shopped around found it for roughly the same price i paid last year, phone current insurer up, yes we can price match that, job done. All insurance companies do this to a certain extent.

I've always been impressed with Admiral's service tbh. My renewal prices have always been cheaper than the amount I paid for the just-expired policy but not as cheap as their new customer quotes on their website (which happen to be cheaper than most places) so every year I ring them up and get them to match their website quotes, and every year they go off, check with their manager/finance department and ring me back saying they'll match it. It's almost like clockwork :D

Wow!

I've always been with Elephant / Admiral

Each year I get a lower quote, and I only find places beating it by about £20 max, so I just stick with them

Basically a +1 to what Howard said, I'm with Elephant, and they always pricematch Admiral for me (same company)

got my renewal through admiral at £650... shopped around and found it for £420.

Phoned admiral up to tell them of the £420 quote and because it was with Elephant they transferred it over, so im still with Admiral but saved £230... lady even admitted on the phone that they over quote just in case people are too lazy to find a better deal.

prices are not always guaranteed to come down, you will be told that it will be owrked out on statistic as rather that you driving, so the price might go up but not because your a worse driver, all insurance companies have some movement on their price, just ring them up and say u have a cheaper price and you will find they can normally do somehting on the price
