So...my car insurnace is due soon

However, I thought I'd change my insurer. as I don't fancy paying £500 again this year

So...I try Churchill...Nice quote and everything..BUT...Then I realised I needed to be over 25 to insure with them (I'm 23) because I have alloys on my car?

Okay then....I thought I'd try Direct line....Cheaper quote I thought!!!!....Oh look, same again!

Seriously now....what is it with these two companys? Why won't they insure me? The car is a bog standard 1.2 Clio II???? No other mods.

It really is sad I feel :p

How is it 'bog standard' if it has aftermarket alloy wheels?

They won't insure you because they do not wish to cover young drivers on modified cars.

It's bog standard other than that fact yes.

It does not make the car perform any better or faster.

So please get off your high horse lovely :)

So its not bog standard then, some insurers don't mind mods some don't touch them with a bargepole, only thing you can do is ring around and hope for the best!

Indeed :)

I'm just stating that fact...The car is the same in every aspect, not as if I put a new air filter in or dump valve or anything :p

No high horse, you asked a question, I provided you with the answer. The insurers you have chosen have decided that they don't want clients under 25 who modify cars.

It's exactly like it's an air filter or a dump valve.

try adding parents as named drivers, or reducing the mileage limit. also try changing your job title.

The frequency of these threads makes me think we really should have an insurance sticky.

Save all these really pointless threads, about how my insurance is really high what can I do to reduce it bla bla bla

Just because it doesn't make the car any quicker, doesnt mean it's not statistically a higher risk.

What is it with people around here not understanding the concept of statistics?

It may not but statistically the sort of people who fit aftermarket wheels to small low powered hatchbacks are more likely to drive like nobs :) Therefore some insurance compaines don't like them.

try swiftcover, most of them were adding £300 to my insurance because i had alloys. except the original spec had alloys too and the new ones are £400 cheaper than the originals.

when i tried swiftcover however i filled out their mods list and ticked the alloys, at the end in the cover details it said 'not modified', so i filled it in again to be sure and it seems they didnt care that i had alloys

i was told by priviledge that it make the car more likely to be stolen, honestly i couldnt see how. id have thought customisation makes the car look less attractive to theives because its more likely to have been driven like a nutter. truth is insurance companies will use the weakest of reasons to increase your premium and thats just the way it is

Well yes I understand that...But having 'x' amount of no claims discount should show these insurers what kind of driver you are. :)

Believe me...I know of the caliber of people in my area...and half of them probably don't even claim what they do to their car

Aye, added the lady to the insurance, brought it down a bit :)

And I can;t add my mother, as she can't drive :p

I'm surprised there isn't an insurance 'sub' part in the motor forums actually

Anyway, my insurance isn't exactly high, I just wished certain places took note of your no claims every now and then :)

Statistics suck...You know that ;)

Apologies if the questions been asked a million times...But I don't live on these forums to witness all the threads coming in and out every day :)

Thank you for the responses all

Ah fair do's :)

Got it down to £320, bit cheaper than £500, which is what Admiral wanted ;)

Direct Line would not insure me for exactly the same reason! Mine are factory fitted alloys as well but that doesnt make a difference obviously.

If they are factory fitted, then no need to tell them because your car is original spec. Even if your car is a special edition that came with alloys, thats still the spec put out for that edition

I found swiftcover to be the cheapest around and have used them for a while, but there is one problem using them is that some posties wont take the insurance documents as legal if you want road tax. Getting tax on line is fine but some post offices wont let you use it as it states on the tax form no photocopies or computer print outs. I did ask how all the other insurance firms get me an insurance document if they dont print them out themselves.

No, alloy wheels are nothing like an air filter or dump valve insurance wise. Aftermarket Air filter/Dump Valve = Performance enhancing. As far as an insurance company is concerned, you have improved the car's performance specifications than standard, as a result it is quicker and you are money likely to have an accident (or so they say).

Alloy wheels are going to have a negligible effect on performance. The only real increased risk is the increased desirability to thieves.

The premiums are loaded for completely different reasons, so how exactly are they the same?

Fitting an aftermarket air filter is going to have negligible performance difference on most cars too - its not like it's going to instantly make you climb a tree in your 1.2 clio because you've bolted a K&N to it.... so I actually agree with fox, its exactly the same. statistics, statistics, statistics - thats what insurance is based on. Statistics only suck when you have a small sample group, but the sample group for insurance premiums is nearly everyone who drives in this country
