Car modification and insurance premiums

I was about to chip in and say, it all depends on the age of the driver and what "experience" they have. Or that's what I've noticed.

I was looking at getting my Fiesta ST lowered. If I took it now, on my current policy (Me @ 20 years old, 2 years named driver no claims, parents on the policy.) it'd be an extra £300

If I wait until January when I hopefully get my first year of NCD, not only does the cost of my policy half, but the cost of modifications only costs £30 more than a standard policy

Try different companies, I'm with Adrian Flux and they charged me £40 for the lowering (I'm 21).

Heavily modified SJ, Exterior roll cage, massive winch on the front to kill pedestrians with, Bucket seats, modded engine, massive wheels/tyres, Engine modded, Jacked up etc etc etc

Not declaring the mods 139 quid.

Declaring the mods 116 quid.

Don't ask me

Standard car you might not take good car of/let the mrs/someone else drive vs. pride and joy I guess.

Swapping the engine on my Capri from a standard 2.8i to a 2.9 24V Cosworth engine with a handful of engine mods to go with it added about £20 to my quotes with footman james :D

Adrian Flux sent me a renewal for £1300 once when I'd paid £600 the previous year. When I called up to investigate, the girl on the other end of the phone asked if she could put me on hold for a few minutes while she ran a quote.

She came back not more than 30 seconds later asking me whether the vehicle was modified. The renewal quote was that of a standard car. She switched me back to a modified policy and... what's this... hello sub £600 quote :D

Car insurance is weird!

I've always used specialists and declared all mods, I've just taken out a new policy with some new mods added on ready for me to fit and I've saved £120 over last years price.

Comparison sites... useless, best price was 230 quid MORE than what I've just taken out.

I've had policies with a few of these but this lot are the most competitive for me year in year out:

Adrian Flux
Chris Knott
Brentacre
Sky
A-Plan

I was with Sky last year, but Brentacre were 120 quid cheaper than them this week! So gone back to those guys. Power limit of 220BHP agreed so can mod to that power with no increase in cost. Can add mods on with no admin fee etc.

It doesn't pay to be loyal so always shop around :)

Not one specialist would either quote me or offer a reasonable quote due to the car & age (<25)
Current insurer (Admiral, bell, elephant group) asked for an extra £30 for my mods but they are not covered value wise in the event of a claim.

as many have said, declare everything and deal with the extra cost, otherwise the policy its self is somewhat useless, so if in the unfortunate event of an accident, your left vastly out of pocket, and potentially subject to criminal charges for driving with invalid insurance.

Admiral are a good mainstream company for dealing with modded cars at reasonable prices, alternatively there are others pace ward are good.

I found that the cost difference was only in the region of £100-150 over a standard version of the same car.
