My tax and MOT ran out at the end of October. Am I supposed to notify them that my car has been off the road or something? It's been in my garage. Waiting for car to get an MOT but I'm thinking there is a new rule about telling them its not on the road?

You have to notify the DVLA that the vehicle is off the road. You can do this online using your tax reminder or your V5C. If you do not do this the DVLA can and probably will fine you.

This isn't a "new" rule in so much that it's been in effect since 1998.

You can declare SORN HERE

What happens in the theoretical case of having a car that has been off-road for a very long time (way before SORN was introduced) but no SORN notice on it?

afaik they sent letters to all numberplates on records wtihout car tax telling them to either pay or send it back declaring SORN

they will have then replied back and SORNd it.

I don't think they did, I've got a Fiesta logbook here from 97 and it's never been SORN or asked for SORN on it, and no fine received either. Ever.

Ahem...my theoretical case might be a kit car that was last on the road in the late 80's. I've never had a reminder for the tax and AFAIK it's never been SORN'd since it was a track car for most of it's life.
